On March 21, 1960, peaceful demonstrators in Sharpeville, South Africa protested apartheid laws, only to be met with violence—69 lives were lost. In response, the United Nations declared March 21 as a day to raise awareness of racial discrimination and reaffirm the global commitment to equal rights for all.

Today, countries around the world observe this day by recognizing progress, challenges, and the importance of fair treatment in all aspects of life. Ensuring access to health and language services, housing, education, and legal protections helps break barriers and create a more inclusive society.

By understanding the history behind this day, we can continue working toward a future where respect and fairness guide our communities.

This summer, the Grants Pass v. Johnson Supreme Court ruling gave local governments the green light to criminalize homelessness, allowing municipalities to arrest or fine people for sleeping outside. Meanwhile, Illinois is facing a growing homelessness crisis with a severe shortage of shelter beds and affordable housing.

NOW – your voice is needed to advocate for IL HB1429, a crucial bill that would protect Illinoisans by preventing local governments from imposing fines and criminal penalties on people experiencing homelessness.
