The Joseph Hartmann Award by Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove is given annually to paramedics and fire districts who exhibit extreme care and rescue in a pre-hospital setting.

We are pleased to announce that the York Center Fire District is the recipient of the 2026 Dr. Joseph Hartmann Award for Medical Excellence in the pre-hospital environment.

York Center Engine 78, Squad 77, Medic 78 and Assistant Chief 77 responded for the reported structure fire in Villa Park. York Center companies were the first units to arrive on scene and quickly went to work deploying an attack line and gaining access to the structure.

At approximately 12:30 pm, the Villa Park Fire Department responded to the reported structure fire in the 200 block of E Terry on June 1, 2026. Upon arrival, crews found fire showing from the roof of a detached garage. Crews quickly deployed a hose line and began extinguishing the fire. Other crews removed the garage door, and the fire was quickly extinguished.

Fire damage was limited to the garage itself. No surrounding structures or the residence were damaged. The residents and their dogs were evacuated from the residence as a precaution. No injuries were reported.

The fire is believed to have started at an electrical connection to an exterior light, based on a preliminary investigation by the Villa Park Fire Investigation Unit.

The Villa Park Fire Department was assisted on the scene by crews from the Elmhurst, Lombard - , Oak Brook, Oakbrook Terrace, and York Center Fire Departments, as well as the Villa Park Police Department.

The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) administers several state-funded grant and loan programs to help local fire departments, fire protection districts, and not-for-profit ambulance services purchase equipment and maintain facilities.

We are proud to announce that the York Center Fire District has been selected as a recipient of a grant in the amount of $19,084.00. This grant money has been awarded for the purchase of thermal imaging cameras.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of former York Center Firefighter/Paramedic, Dave Janssen. He served the district from 2010 to 2023. He also served with the Addison Fire Protection District for over 30 years. Dave was a staple of the York Center family. His relentless work ethic, willingness to take on any task, commitment to excellence and infectious personality have left their mark on the men and women that served alongside of him. Dave, we are lucky to have known you and honored to have served with you.
