🛰️🚀LAUNCH ALERT🛰️🚀

The U.S. Space Force has approved the launch of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying the Starlink 17-50 mission to low-Earth orbit, Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026, between 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. PT from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4).

A minimal possibility exists that residents of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties may hear a sonic boom during the launch. Depending on weather and location, this event may sound like an abrupt crack of thunder, according to prediction models.

A live webcast of this mission will begin about 10 minutes prior to liftoff, which you can watch at https://www.spacex.com/launches/sl-17-50 and on X .

As a vital hub for space access and advanced air and space testing, Vandenberg SFB plays a critical role in strengthening America’s national security through Assured Access to Space. In addition to the base's active spaceport, Vandenberg Guardians and Airmen enable essential missions such as nuclear deterrence, homeland defense, global command and control of space assets, orbital tracking, and the training of the next generation of space operations Guardians and nuclear Airmen.

🎒 Happy First Day of School to all of this year’s Lompoc Valley scholars! 🎓

Thank you to so many community residents who nominated K-12 students for this year’s Back to School backpack giveaway. Staff at City Hall loved seeing the excitement on every winner’s face when they came to pick up their backpacks. 🤩

City staff donated enough school supplies and backpacks for 22 students this year! Here’s to an A+ academic year! ✅✏️

🚒 We're excited to announce that Kevin Shay has been appointed chief of the Lompoc City Fire Department , officially entering his new role on August 8th. Chief Shay has been serving as Interim Fire Chief since March.

🧯Chief Shay has over 20 years of fire service, 18 of which have been right here in the Lompoc community!

🧑‍🚒Chief Shay shared that he is committed to providing dependable service every day and is "excited about what we will accomplish for both our department and the city of Lompoc."
