The City of London

The City of London This is the official page of the City of London, Kentucky. Located in Laurel County, Ky.

London's location and relatively low cost of living have helped make our city a "Vacation Crossroads" and a center for business, shopping, entertainment, education and health-care. London also enjoys a sound base of industrial and retail business, and our schools are exemplary. Moderately priced housing, low utility costs, a moderate climate and proximity to huge forests, beautiful lakes, tourist

attractions and the metropolitan areas of Lexington and Knoxville combine to make London a very special place for visitors, new residents, and business opportunities. We hope you'll visit us and find the friendly faces and spirit that will make you want to call London home!

London’s Independence Day celebration is back with a new date and a brand-new home. Red, White, and Boom will take place Friday, July 3, at the newly constructed Wilderness Road Event Center at the Laurel County Fairgrounds, marking a shift for the long-running event.

After more than 20 years at the Somerset Community College campus, Red, White, and Boom is relocating due to the construction of the college’s new Career & Technical Education Training Complex. As co-hosts of the event for decades, the College asked that the event be moved during construction, which is set to begin this summer. While the move marks a change, it also signals exciting progress for the community.

This year’s celebration will showcase one of London’s newest assets at the 45,000-square-foot pavilion at the Wilderness Road Event Center, which officially opened this May. The facility has already welcomed major events such as the Daniel Boone National Jeep Takeover and the Archery Shooters Association, and will host the inaugural Southeast Kentucky Fair later this summer. Designed to serve as a regional hub for events, trade shows, and large-scale gatherings, the center represents a major investment in the future of London and Laurel County.

The fairgrounds themselves carry an even deeper meaning. After being directly impacted by the devastating 2025 tornado that destroyed previous structures, the site now stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, growth, and community strength.

In 2026, there’s even more reason to celebrate. This year’s Red, White, and Boom marks London’s 200th anniversary and America’s 250th birthday, making it one of the most significant celebrations in the event’s history. Organizers promise a bigger and better experience than ever before.

Festivities will kick off at 4 p.m. with a petting zoo, train rides, food trucks, inflatables, games, skydivers, and the DAV’s Presentation of the Colors. Additionally, to help commemorate America 250 and London 200, the City of London and Laurel County Fiscal Court are sponsoring a drone show prior to Southeastern Kentucky’s largest fireworks display, which will begin at dusk.

Live music will take center stage beginning at 6 p.m., closing with New Orleans’ own Bucktown All-Stars, a multi-award-winning group whose set is scheduled to span 2 hours.

“I hope that we can get a good crowd out there and put on a good show for the people of London,” said Bucktown All-Stars band member Kenny Kerth. “We’re looking forward to bringing a little New Orleans flair.”

Kerth lived in London for 15 years, deepening his love for music by studying it under locally-beloved Music Director and Conductor Jack Walker. Walker will be recognized for his commitment and influence in the community at the event, receiving a Legacy Award.

Organizers plan to announce a lineup of locations outside the property where the fireworks show can be viewed. As always, Red, White and Boom remains a free, family-friendly event, with food available for purchase and all other activities open to the public.

Guests are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets and plan to spend the evening celebrating in a new space that reflects both the history and the future of the community.

Presented by London Tourism & Parks and the City of London. Special thanks to our volunteers and all City of London crews, including Public Works, Police, and Fire, as well as Laurel County Emergency Management.

Community Update from Mayor Randall Weddle

I want to take a moment to provide our community with an update on the efforts currently underway by the City of London and the London City Police Department to strengthen our response to individuals experiencing mental health crises, behavioral health emergencies, and situations involving residents with special needs.

Over the past several weeks, city leadership, police personnel, healthcare professionals, and community partners have been actively engaged in education, training, and planning efforts designed to better serve our residents.

These efforts have included meetings with healthcare providers and behavioral health professionals, discussions regarding crisis response resources available in our region, the distribution of educational materials to officers, and participation in specialized training opportunities focused on improving interactions with individuals in crisis.

We have worked closely with Cumberland River Behavioral Health to better understand their 24/7 crisis response services and training opportunities. We have also coordinated additional educational opportunities with organizations that specialize in supporting individuals with autism and other special needs.

Today, June 3rd, city first responders are participating in specialized training with the Kentucky Autism Training Center. This training is designed to provide additional knowledge and practical tools to help responders better understand, communicate with, and assist individuals on the autism spectrum during emergency situations.

In addition, city personnel have begun the preliminary stages of exploring a specialized response team that could provide compassionate, informed assistance during mental health and behavioral health incidents, as well as situations involving individuals with special needs.

I want to offer a special thank you to Lisa Depew for her guidance, and commitment throughout this process. Lisa has played a significant role in bringing together resources, healthcare professionals, and educational opportunities that have helped move these efforts forward.

I also want to thank the many healthcare professionals, behavioral health specialists, advocates, families, and community members who have shared their knowledge, experiences, and expertise with us. Your willingness to help has made a meaningful difference.

While there is always more work to do, I am proud of the collaboration taking place between our city departments and community partners. Our goal remains simple: to ensure every resident is treated with dignity, compassion, understanding, and respect while maintaining the safety of everyone involved.

We will continue learning, improving, and working together to better serve the people of London.

Mayor Randall Weddle
