At approximately 3:12 a.m. this morning, the Laurel County Fire Department responded on a mutual aid request with the Lily Fire Department to assist with a commercial structure fire. Crews arrived on scene and immediately began fire suppression and operational support efforts alongside responding agencies.

At approximately 3:26 a.m., during active firefighting operations, an exterior wall of the structure collapsed, injuring Firefighter Landen Saylor with the Laurel County Fire Department and a Firefighter from the Lily Fire Department.

Both firefighters were treated on scene by emergency personnel and transported to Saint Joseph London for further evaluation and treatment. Firefighter Saylor was examined and treated for non-life threatening injuries and has since been released from the hospital.

We ask the community to continue keeping all responding firefighters and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

Today, the Laurel County Fire Department wants to wish a very Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible moms in our community. Your love, strength, sacrifice, and support are what keep families and communities strong every single day.

We especially want to recognize the rockstar moms who raised firefighters. The women who answered late night phone calls, worried through storms and emergencies, taught strength and compassion, and helped shape the men and women who now serve others without hesitation.

Behind every firefighter is a mom who helped build the courage, heart, and dedication it takes to answer the call.

From all of us at Laurel County Fire Department, thank you for everything you do and Happy Mother’s Day!

Please make plans to join the LCFD and other first responders throughout the county as we remember those we lost on May 16th.

This event is at 11am on May 16, 2026 located at Wyan-Pine Elementary.

DAY OF REMEMBRANCE SET
FOR TORNADO VICTIMS

On May 16, 2026, the Laurel County community will come together to remember the 19 people killed by an F-4 tornado one year ago, celebrate the survivors and to thank those who’ve been instrumental in the recovery.

A Day of Remembrance will be held Saturday, May 16 at 11 a.m. at Wyan-Pine Elementary School gymnasium on Ky. 363. The school is about a half mile from the Sunshine Hills Subdivision, where 10 of the fatalities occurred.

During the remembrance, the names of all 19 victims will be read. There will also be special singing, survivor stories, special guests and recollections from first responders who worked heroically that night to save people who were injured when their homes were destroyed by 170 mph winds.

After the tornado, Wyan-Pine Elementary served as a command center and staging area for volunteers who helped with recovery efforts. Those volunteers will be recognized during the remembrance, along with state and local road crews who helped with debris removal. Companies who donated equipment and manpower to help move the mountain of debris also will be recognized.

A free meal will offered after the remembrance to all of those in attendance, provided by Laurel County Judge-Executive David Westerfield and the Laurel County Cattleman’s Association.

Everyone is invited to attend this special day to remember and honor those killed during this tragic event. Please mark it on your calendar.

Update: 7:50pm Roadway is back open.

LCFD Firefighters are currently on scene assisting with traffic control for Delta Gas due to a gas line that has been cut on Keavy Road.

Keavy Road is shut down from the roundabout on Old Whitley to Philpot Road. Use caution and plan for an alternate route.

If you live near this affected area, you can still
access your home. Simply speak with a First Responder on scene.

We will update once the roadway is back open.
