Just had a complete stranger, an 8 year old girl, come by while I’m eating lunch to thank me for my service. Usually I just give the obligatory “Thank you for your support” but this time I was just puzzled, as she placed this on my table. I don’t know who you are little girl, but you’ve made this Sailor get a little lump in his throat. With the utmost sincerity, thank you for your support. @ Londonderry, New Hampshire

with Straight from the mouth of Submarine Officer! I can attest from the enlisted perspective, serving onboard a submarine was one of the coolest and most challenging things I’ve done so far. Read on for a bit of LT Leary’s story!

In 2009, I was very hesitant to sign on the dotted line for NUPOC. With graduation two years away, and a five year commitment to the nuclear Navy to follow, I kept asking myself the same question. “What is the opportunity cost of joining this program?”
It turns out that there were other competing questions in my head as well. “What if I don’t do this and spend the rest of my life wondering what adventure I would be missing?” “What is the opportunity cost of NOT joining?”
Well now 9 years later I can honestly say all that stress of choice was largely manufactured by me! When I compare my own journey to that of my peers, I’m very content with my choice. The Navy has presented unique challenges, limitless leadership opportunities, excellent pay and support, and a ton of other benefits that I don’t think are commonly advertised.
Here are some things I got from the Navy that I didn’t foresee.
Friends all over the world. Friends who I trained and worked with who were my age and who I shared just about all of my time with.
The ability to say “I drove a submarine through the Strait of Malacca.” And unfortunately an inability to talk about a lot of other cool things I got to do (it’s classified).
Insane organizational and planning skills. Try planning and executing an op where over 100 individuals operate in concert. Oh yea and a majority of those individuals are 17-22 years old and recently qualified. LARPing skills highly valued here.
I could say all this at age 25. How many entry-level jobs get you there in just 4 years?

11 years ago I took a leap of faith and joined the US Navy. My intent was to do my 6 year contract in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program and go back to college. Since joining, I’ve been to 8 countries, married the love of my life (shouts out to ), and made countless lifelong friends. Sure, there were days that I questioned my decision. But in the end, the good days have overwhelmingly outweighed the bad. Now I’m 4 months away from heading back to school for NURSING, all for FREE using the GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon Program. I have ZERO regrets, and I look forward to the next chapter of my life with sincere gratitude for all the opportunities given to me by the US Navy. Hope y’all have a terrific Tuesday, HOOYAH!!!

CALLING ENGINEERS AND ARCHITECTS!!! Would you be interested in gaining experience and training needed to become a licensed Professional Engineer, at the same time developing and honing leadership skills? The Navy is more than ships, submarines, and aircraft at sea. Hundreds of naval shore facilities worldwide-like small cities with hospitals, airfields, power plants, housing, stores, office buildings and much more-make up the fleet support establishment. Naval Officers in the Civil Engineer Corps (CEC) provide professional facilities engineering services and management at all Navy and Marine Corps facilities worldwide. The name "Civil Engineer Corps" does not refer solely to the discipline of Civil Engineering, but to a multitude of engineering and architectural disciplines.
