With the approaching Winter Weather, the Lone Jack Fire Protection District would like to pass on some important information:

Key Fire Safety Reminders

-Clear the Fire Hydrant: Shovel a 3-foot perimeter around hydrants near your home. This allows firefighters to find and access water quickly during an emergency.

-Exhaust Vent Safety: Clear snow away from furnace, dryer, and water heater vents. Blocked vents can cause deadly carbon monoxide to back up into your home.

-Space Heater Caution: Keep all heaters at least 3 feet away from anything flammable (blankets, curtains, furniture) and always plug them directly into a wall outlet, never an extension cord.

-Safety Check: Ensure your home has working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level. Keep flashlights and extra batteries ready in case of power outages; never use candles for light.

Travel & Home Protection

-Slow Down: Icy roads significantly increase stopping distances. If you must drive, increase your following distance and watch for ice on bridges and shaded areas.

-Prevent Frozen Pipes: Let faucets drip slightly and keep cabinet doors open to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.

-Check on Neighbors: Reach out to elderly or vulnerable neighbors to ensure they are warm and have necessary supplies.

Outdoor Safety & Shoveling

-Be Safe: Shoveling snow can be a major strain on your heart. Take it easy!

-Safe Shoveling: Warm up before starting, push snow instead of lifting it, and take frequent breaks to avoid overexertion.

-Dress in Layers: Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing.

-Take Breaks: Don't overexert yourself; push the snow instead of lifting it whenever possible.

-Stay Hydrated: You can still get dehydrated in the cold.

As always, we are staffed and ready to respond if you need us. We may utilize the above pictured vehicle, which is our Brush 2, and has a 9’ Stainless Steel plow attached. This allows emergency crews to get to you in an emergency even when your driveway may not be clear of snow. We hope you will stay inside, safe and warm, but don’t hesitate to call if you need help!

Today, your Lone Jack firefighters, and our neighboring aid mutual partner the Southern Jackson Co. FPD’s Engine Company 2, performed forcible entry, search, and overhaul drills. Veteran members gave pointers and tips to newer members - the best tradition in the fire service!

In the 19th century, fire engines were pulled by horses. After returning from a fire, firefighters had to detach the horses from the heavy equipment. It was difficult, if not impossible, to accurately maneuver and back the large, horse-drawn engines into the station bays. Therefore, firefighters had to manually push the engine into the firehouse.

As motorized fire engines became common, the practical need to push the vehicles into the bay disappeared. Happily, the tradition has endured as a way to honor the generations of firefighters who came before, and to celebrate the arrival of a new fire engine and bring it officially into service.

Today we celebrate and honor the rich 50-year history of the Lone Jack Fire Protection District with a “push in” ceremony, along with a remembrance of the first responders of 9/11. The ceremony symbolizes teamwork, dedication, respect for the past, and the readiness of the new equipment to serve the community. The officiant of the ceremony, Reverend Lawrence F. Scofield, was a volunteer firefighter for 36 years and has served as a Fire Chaplain for over 25 years.

This newly in service apparatus is a 2025 Spartan Fire Engine and will be known as
“Pumper 1” and will be responding to emergencies starting today, 9/11/2025.

We would like to thank the residents of our Fire District for their bond approval to purchase this apparatus and their daily support for the men and women at the Lone Jack Fire Protection District. We would also like to thank the apparatus committee for their time and dedication to designing the best apparatus for our community, and the Board of Directors for their support.
