Yesterday, in one of my final acts as mayor, I had the honor of helping reopen the Queen Mary to the public. Since it closed due to the start of the pandemic, our goal has been to not only preserve and restore the ship and its history but also assure our community that it will be well maintained so that visitors from around the world can continue to enjoy it for generations.

In the past months, we have addressed the most critical repairs securing the ship’s structural stability, maintaining safety and preserving its history. Our work is not over though, and we will continue to identify and enact other needed repairs and preservation projects over the course of this next year and well into the future.

This first phase of reopening commenced this week and provides opportunities for the public to tour some of the most historic areas of the vessel, witness the repairs we have worked so hard to make and enjoy the rich history of the ship by learning from our distinguished Commodore. The limited tours were fully booked by the end of the first day of announcing the opportunity — a strong testament to just how much people care about the Queen.

Efforts are well underway to get the hotel, restaurants, bars and shops onboard ready to reopen in early 2023, and I look forward to returning to the ship next year when these great elements are back open for business.

Lastly, we were also excited to announce the launch of a first-ever annual membership program for the Queen Mary. For $150 annually, members will be allowed admission onboard the ship, as well as other perks.

You can find out more about this great new program and what it goes to support by visiting ➡️ LBheritage.org/queen-mary

Lastly, I want to thank our City team for all they have done to get the Queen Mary back open for people to enjoy, and the Long Beach Heritage Foundation, Evolution Hospitality and the Queen Mary Heritage Foundation for their partnership in developing and taking on our incredible new membership program.

The future is bright for the RMS Queen Mary, and I look forward to supporting this iconic Long Beach landmark for years to come.

Thank you, and Go Long Beach!

We are just days away from Rex Richardson being sworn into office as our city's next mayor. Mayor-Elect Richardson has proven himself over these past several years to be an effective leader who is focused on service. The work that he has done for his constituents in North Long Beach and across the city is a clear testament to that.

I hope that you will join us on Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022, at the Long Beach Terrace Theater to celebrate his historic swearing-in and recognize the other newly elected and re-elected council members and officers. You can RSVP for the inauguration here ➡️ https://lbinauguration.com/

The other elected officials being sworn in include:

🔹 Dawn McIntosh, City Attorney
🔹 Doug Haubert, City Prosecutor
🔹 Laura Doud, City Auditor
🔹 Mary Zendejas, Council District 1
🔹 Kristina Duggan, Council District 3
🔹 Megan Kerr, Council District 5
🔹 Roberto Uranga, Council District 7
🔹 Dr. Joni Ricks-Oddie, Council District 9

In addition to the ceremony on Dec. 20, to welcome the Mayor-Elect and the new and reinstated Councilmembers, residents are encouraged to give back to their neighborhoods by participating in the Long Beach Inauguration Service Day on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2022. More information on where to volunteer and how to participate can be found here ➡️ https://www.longbeach.gov/press-releases/city-of-long-beach-to-host-inauguration-service-day-events-to-welcome-new-mayor-and-councilmembers/

I look forward to seeing you there.

The final item approved by the City Council before the gavel is passed to Mayor-Elect Rex Richardson was to approve a direction for our city's COVID-19 memorial, to be dedicated to the lives lost during the pandemic.

The plan was selected by a committee of community leaders with backgrounds in the arts, healthcare, and education; as well as organizers who have led the COVID-19 response at the neighborhood level. The project is fully funded.

We're grateful that we could dedicate the final item of our term in office to a space honoring the over 1,300 friends, family and neighbors we have lost in our community.

A huge thank you to so many friends and supporters for joining us today at my final farewell address at California State University, Long Beach as Mayor of Long Beach. The event would not have been possible without LB Mayor's Fund for Education. Only one week left before I pass the baton at city hall.

Tomorrow, December 13, we're excited to honor some of the most distinguished community leaders in Long Beach with Keys to the City. Rich Archbold and Naomi Rainey-Pierson have made incredible contributions to our community and we are thrilled to be presenting them with this recognition in Mayor Garcia's final key to the city presentation.

The community is invited to attend in person or stream the presentation live on LBTV or the City’s YouTube channel here: www.youtube.com/

The presentation will take place at 4:30 PM in the City Council Chambers. Below, you can learn a little more about each of the recipients before we see them in the City Council Chambers tomorrow.

🔹 Rich Archbold was born with ink in his veins. In his more than 60 years of distinguished journalism experience, Rich has worked as a reporter, city editor, managing editor and editor. Most notably in our community, Rich joined the Press-Telegram in 1978 as managing editor and was appointed executive editor in 1997. In 2010 he began a new role as Public Editor and columnist. Under Rich’s leadership, the Press-Telegram has won many significant awards. Among them: the Associated Press Managing Editors Public Service Award for a local high school recruiting scandal, a National Headliner award for an investigative series on patient dumping at hospitals and the Greater LA Press Club award for Best Newspaper in LA County.

Rich is well known throughout the journalism field and has been active in several professional organizations, most notably the Associated Press Managing Editors Association (APME) where he was named national president in 1994. He also was president of the California Associated Press News Executive Council. In 2019, Rich received the Distinguished Journalist Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, Los Angeles chapter.

Beyond his unparalleled influence on our community through journalism, he also has been an amazing community leader and mentored some of Long Beach’s finest through his various roles with the Leadership Long Beach Institute. This recognition will honor his professional, personal and community-focused achievements and more.

🔹 Naomi Rainey-Pierson has spent her life dedicated to the service of her community. Many know Naomi for her constant and steady leadership with the Long Beach National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) branch. She has been actively involved with the NAACP since the age of 14, is a past vice president of the California State Conference NAACP, and has served as president of the Long Beach Branch since 2000.

Beyond being a storied civil rights activist, Naomi is also an award-winning educator, philanthropist and entrepreneur and is a sought-after diversion, inclusion and equity consultant. Throughout her years of community work, she has committed to the development of youth exemplified by her outstanding efforts in activities with the NAACP’s Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics: a program that inspires young Black students to expand their horizons and sharpen their skill in the performing arts, culinary arts, humanities, visual arts, business, science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Because of her vast knowledge and commitment to service, Ms. Rainey-Pierson has served on many volunteer boards and commissions, including those of Long Beach City College Foundation, Los Angel County Natural History Museum, St. Mary’s Medical Center, MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute and Long Beach Cancer League — and has received a number of special honors in recognition of her efforts. A proud Long Beach State alumnae, whose dorm was named in her honor, Naomi has also continually given back to CSULB in every phase of her life and was recently recognized for her work with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters (L.H.D.) degree during the 2019 Commencement ceremonies. Ms. Rainey-Pierson also currently serves on the Long Beach Water Commission and is a trailblazer being the first African American female to serve on the board.

Today, families across our city and country are gathering to celebrate Thanksgiving. This is my final Thanksgiving as Mayor, and I'm thankful to have had the opportunity to serve an amazing community for the past eight years.

I never imagined when I first took office that I would be leading our city through the challenges of the last few years. Together we've helped one another through the COVID-19 pandemic and are now on the road to a strong recovery. I want to thank every member of our community who has stepped up to bring us to this point today.

After what we have all worked together to achieve, I am more hopeful than ever for the future of our city. It has been the honor of my lifetime to serve as your mayor, and I am thankful for the opportunity to lead our city every day.

Thank you, and Happy Thanksgiving!
