In August, Sarasota County voters will choose three new School Board members. Our best candidates for change -- need your help right away!

School Board candidate Jimmy Glover has already received the necessary number of petitions his campaign needs to qualify him for the ballot. However, Beth Mayberry and Megan Tennimon still need a significant number of petition signatures before the qualifying deadline – which is now only weeks away!

Qualifying petition for Beth Mayberry:

If you have not already signed the petitions to help get Beth and Megan on the ballot, please print out both attached petitions, complete them, and deliver them to me -- or to the Sarasota County Democratic Party.

Please ask your friends and neighbors to complete the candidate petitions, as well. And share this information on your social media.

It’s also a great time to host get togethers with friends and neighbors and make sure they know about elections on August 18th and that Sarasotans need to vote for ALL THREE open seats.

PLEASE FORWARD AND SHARE TO PARENTS AND TEACHERS but open to all community members.

Attention all parents in Manatee, Sarasota and surrounding areas. We are laying off 180 teachers. $45,000,000 of our Schools Budget has been redirected through Universal Vouchers.
Let's face it. We can no longer safely assume we even have school board members who want Public Schools to survive.

Saturday there is a critically important event you can attend either virtually or in person, and it is time to get involved for the future of our schools!

FREE CHILDCARE WILL BE PROVIDED ONSITE as they really want to make this accessible for parents to be able to attend.

Sharing what I received from one of the organizers, Carol Lerner from Support our Schools ( supportourschools.com ):

Stronger Together, that is the name of a public education advocacy forum just four days away. This is not an event where we will just sit around discussing the horrors happening to our public schools. Rather, it will be a day for determining the support teachers and families need and what we must do as a united community to not just stop the assault on education but to begin ushering in an even better future for high quality, inclusive public education for all.

Support Our Schools and 5 other grassroots organizations invite you to attend a full day of exciting keynote talks, a panel presentation and two action-oriented workshops. These sessions will cover the crisis in public education, what our community can do to support parents (who recently launched a new parent advocacy organization in Sarasota), and what we can do to support teachers facing layoffs and program cuts.

The morning will begin with a keynote presentation by nationally acclaimed author, Jennifer Berkshire and a featured speech by Florida's leading public education advocate, Sue Woltanski. Following this, parents of school-aged children in Sarasota will lead a panel discussion during the morning session, moderated by statewide leader, Damaris Allen of Families for Strong Public Schools. Following lunch, a deep dive workshop again led by Sarasota parent organizers and a leader of the Florida PTA will take place. A second workshop, led by retired Sarasota teacher Christy Karwatt, will feature a panel of active Sarasota County teachers.

When: Saturday, April 18th, 9 AM to 3 PM
Where: Unitarian Universalists of Sarasota, 3975 Fruitville Road, Sarasota
Amenities: Free lunch catered by The Breakfast Company; Free Childcare
Register at: www.supportourschools.com or use the QR code in the flyer attached.

You can use the QR code to register or register at www.supportourschools.com.

Please post this event on social media and email notices to your contacts

I hope to see you on Saturday. Remember, we are Stronger Together!

A reminder that school board elections are August 18th, and we vote for every open seat in our county, not just our individual school districts. Let's elect Board Members that want to return to 6:00 pm board meetings, so teachers, students, and parents impacted by all these changes can actually attend and have their voices heard!

PAUL KRUGMAN GETS TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER January 6, 2026.

"American fascism is on the march, and anyone who balks at saying that clearly, who makes excuses and pretends that Trump and the people he brought in aren’t monsters, is deeply unpatriotic. If we are to have a chance at saving democracy, our first duty must be clarity. No sanewashing, no bothsidesing. Only facing the horrible truth can set us free."

Thank you to our speakers, guests, and sponsors who attended and supported the first, and sell-out, lunch in our America at the Crossroads series on Nov 4. We heard from School Board District 1 candidate Jimmy Glover For Sarasota School Board on why he’s running and how to improve learning in our schools. Candidate for Governor David Jolly was the keynote and shared his vision for Florida. The crowd was fired up to see change in Florida, bring back dignity for everyone and make it affordable to live and work here.

We hope to see you at the next one, December 11 at the Sarasota Yacht Club. Register today:

From Ann Roth:

LOVING AMERICA

I do love America. I especially love America because I don’t have to constantly shout it out for that love to be true. I don’t have to feel un-American when I express my opinion or work for causes that I believe in. Is freedom of speech un-American, Is freedom of the press un-American, is participation in marches that protest ideas and actions that counteract these freedoms un-American. And let’s get to the very very local level. Am I un-American, do I lack patriotism, do I “hate” America because I think changing a name of a road that includes the name America is a very poor idea. What is un-American about that?.

The Town of Longboat Key was thrown into a crazy battle about renaming our main road, Gulf of Mexico Dr. to Gulf of America Dr. having been in existence since our town was incorporated. The new name was suggested by the U.S. President and the Governor of Florida.

Our coastal water, the Gulf of Mexico, was changed on maps to Gulf of America, but our small town had the choice of changing our main road to Gulf of America Dr. and there does not seem to be any mandate from the Feds or State that it has to be followed.

After this idea perked several months ago and the Longboat population got wind of it, their voices were raised. The preponderance of these voices were raised against such a change for many strategic reasons and for the absurdity of the request.

A workshop meeting with all seven Commissioners and a crowded audience was held on Oct. 20. And this is where Democracy took hold.

In this small island hamlet the strength of the peoples voices were heard. Most of the speakers were strongly against the name change but there were others that were passionate for it.

The Commission unanimously decided to keep the name of Gulf of Mexico because the majority wanted that.

Some may say the time and labor was a waste over such a petty issue, but I think it proved a very important point. One that we are grappling with in our country. What can just a few people do to counteract injustice or even absurd mandates. I think this small, but mighty small, town showed that Democracy works and works well. Democracy is about LOVE, not hate. Small can get bigger and bigger!

Spotlight. It is Time to be Afraid by Bob Gary

Mussolini reportedly observed that if you pluck a chicken one feather at a time, it will be naked before anyone notices. The assault on our democracy has not been subtle, but it has been one feather at a time. Let’s look at some of these actions by the Trump administration and what they mean for every American.

Without proof, Trump fired Erika McEntarfer, Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Her sin was reporting weak job numbers. The U.S. was once seen as the gold standard for economic reporting. Now, our numbers can no longer be trusted. You should care because if we can’t plan and adjust government policies to prevent a financial crisis, we are all at risk. This feather was plucked so one man wouldn’t look bad.

Our EPA has traditionally aimed to protect our health and the environment, based on evidence that greenhouse gases threaten our health. Trump’s EPA proposed repealing that finding, which would allow the rollback of greenhouse gas emission standards. This risks the health of children and others vulnerable to climate change’s impacts, but it benefits the fossil fuel industry and car makers. Clean, beautiful coal will likely come back at the cost of clean air—another feather plucked, sacrificing scientific truth for economic gains to current and future donors.

Highlighting the low points, there’s the dismantling of safeguards against corruption through the removal of inspector generals, loosening rules on cryptocurrency and money laundering—driven by an unprecedented Supreme Court ruling on Presidential immunity.

Attacks on the rule of law include undermining the independence of law enforcement, attacking judges, and appointing unqualified judges likely to support the administration’s agenda. Coupled with financial intimidation, such as frivolous lawsuits that lead to multimillion-dollar settlements and withholding university funds over policies the government disapproves of, it’s clear this government seeks to silence opposition.

In plain sight, our President appears intent on taking control of our universities—once the pride of the world—by restricting research, limiting foreign student enrollment, censoring free speech, and controlling curricula and admissions. Ultimately, this threatens to drive away international students and result in a flood of lost tuition dollars and a brain drain of enormous harm.

The Department of Justice has been weaponized, firing qualified attorneys for doing their jobs and launching politically motivated investigations against opponents—signaling that dissent will be met with force.

It hardly matters if you oppose these actions because gerrymandering in Texas and beyond is rigging elections in favor of Republicans, and it’s Congress that certifies presidential results. While Democrats in California, New York, and elsewhere may push back, it signifies that the right to choose representatives is eroding.

Even workplaces aren’t immune. A recent memo from the Office of Personnel Management allowing “religious freedom” in federal jobs could lead to discrimination against religious minorities, whether intentionally or not.

I haven’t even touched on the aggressive tactics of ICE agents, who sometimes sn**ch individuals without notice, violating constitutional rights, and deporting them to places like “Alligator Alcatraz” or worse, often without notifying families. Is this the America we want for future generations?

What Can You Do?

So, you ask what you can do? With Congress abdicated and the Supreme Court politicized, the challenge seems overwhelming. The President is even personally interviewing four-star generals, blurring the lines between military and politics. If our respected military were ever used to suppress civilian protests, it would be game over.

The first step is recognizing how close we are to losing our democracy. Without active participation from disengaged citizens—especially independents and moderates—little can change. It’s vital that these groups, along with Democrats, unite to stop this slide into authoritarianism.

We must rally now, for this isn’t a normal time in our history. If we don’t stand up and fight with everything we have, everything we cherish could be lost. The era of false hope and trusting in the goodness of the American people is over.

Now is the time to defend our nation, built on institutions that weren’t designed to resist an autocratic president, a neutered Congress, and a politicized Supreme Court. Yes, it’s up to us—our collective future depends on it.

The President believes that a passive America will allow him to reshape our nation’s foundations and values. Let’s unite and prove him wrong!
