September 12, 1879, 80% of downtown Longmont burns. Longmont's worst fire starts in the bakery on the east side of Main Street, two buildings north of 3rd Street. The Emerson & Buckingham Bank building, the first brick building in Longmont, is undamaged, even though it's across the street from the bakery. Here's the headline from the Longmont Ledger that day. Immediately after the fire, the President of the E&B Bank, William Buckingham, purchases the first fire wagon and all the fire uniforms for the City of Longmont.

During the restoration of the building, the original handwritten script lettering from the lumberyard was uncovered with the words "Buckingham" written on the wood beams. These photos were taken immediately after the construction crew discovered it.

Some of the original discoveries during restoration were the original back wall of the bank, the covered-up skylight, the original tin ceiling tiles, the 1870's wood floors, the marble at the front of the bank that no one thought existed, the coal chutes, and the writing by the lumberyard of the beams that said "Buckingham" in charcoal script letters.

One of the late 1800's ads run by the Emerson & Buckingham Bank. Note that Walter Buckingham's wife, Mary, is listed as one of the principles of the bank which means that this ad ran after 1881, the year Walter died.
