๐Ÿ‘‹ Meet Longmont Rotary's newest Rotarian, Janessa Lopez! Born in Wyoming and when she moved to Colorado, she knew it was going to be home. In 2019, she joined the U.S. Air Force, serving three years as a Weather Forecaster. Her military journey took her all over the countryโ€”with assignments across Texas, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Louisianaโ€”where she earned the prestigious Diamond Sharp Award for outstanding performance. Now back in her favorite state, Janessa serves as the Student Services Coordinator for IBMC College. Driven by a lifelong passion for service, she is thrilled to join Rotary to make a lasting positive impact locally and globally! Welcome, Janessa! ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Event Recap: The Arapaho in Boulder County & Colorado

We had an incredible, eye-opening presentation from Dr. Andrew Cowell (Professor of Linguistics at CU Boulder) on the past, present, and future of the Arapaho people.

Here are the key takeaways from his engaging talk:

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ A Language Tied to the Land: The Arapaho language is a complex, descriptive Algonquian language. Its unique vocabulary encodes deep ecological wisdom and rich, place-based knowledge across Colorado.

โณ History & Resilience: Dr. Cowell reviewed the painful history of forced displacement following the Sand Creek Massacre and discussed current life on the Wind River Reservationโ€”highlighting cultural adaptation, economic shifts, and ongoing social challenges.

๐ŸŒฑ Active Revitalization: The future is bright with powerful preservation efforts! These include local language classes, an online learning portal and dictionary, youth programs, the annual Sand Creek run, and traditional place-name mapping.

๐Ÿค Rebuilding Connections: From Denverโ€™s cultural embassy to meaningful land-back dialogues, the focus today is on restoring Indigenous presence in Colorado and rebuilding relationships through collaboration and education.

A huge thank you to Dr. Cowell for sharing his expertise, and to everyone who joined us to listen, learn, and engage!
