Who do you know?
Following the end of VVVVI, 1,500 veterans returned to the Boulder Valley area. Some were from Boulder, others Longmont, Louisville, Lafayette and surrounding rural and mountain areas. To honor those who served our country in this Great War, the 9-Mile Pillars were built in 1928. These pillars flank the Road of Remembrance highway, from the intersection of US 287 and Arapahoe Road.
During the 2026 legislative session, Colorado legislature passed a House Joint
Resolution formally designating Arapahoe between US 287 and 28th Street as "The Road of Remembrance."
Returning veterans likely had family members still living in the area. The Road of
Remembrance committee seeks to find the descendants of these World War I veterans. As part of a formal program to dedicate the Road on September 15, 2026, a planning committee seeks to find these descendants in order to honor their family members at this event
Might you be related to one of these veterans? The list of those 1 ,500 names along with details can be accessed through https://historicboulder.ora/road-of-remembrancededication. Who do you know?

After more than a century, buffalo once again roam the Wind River Reservation, marking an important milestone in Indigenous-led conservation and cultural restoration. The return began in 2016 when genetically intact buffalo were reintroduced to Tribal lands through the Wind River Tribal Buffalo Initiative, led by Eastern Shoshone ecologist Jason Baldes. Since then, the herd has grown to more than 200 animals under the stewardship of the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho Tribes. The project represents years of planning, collaboration, and a shared commitment to restoring a species that has shaped the ecology and history of the Great Plains for thousands of years.

Buffalo are recognized as a keystone species whose grazing patterns help maintain healthy prairie ecosystems by supporting native grasses, dispersing seeds, improving soil health, and creating habitat for other wildlife. For the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho Tribes, however, the restoration reaches far beyond ecological benefits. Buffalo remain deeply connected to cultural identity, traditional foods, ceremonies, and the enduring relationship between Indigenous peoples and their homelands. Their return offers younger generations the opportunity to reconnect with traditions that were disrupted when buffalo populations were nearly eliminated during the nineteenth century.

The restoration effort also reflects Tribal sovereignty in action. By voting to recognize buffalo as wildlife rather than livestock, the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho Tribes affirmed the buffalo's place as a native species and an integral part of their cultural heritage. As the herds continue to grow, the Wind River Tribal Buffalo Initiative demonstrates how Indigenous leadership can strengthen ecosystems, revitalize cultural traditions, and ensure that both the land and the communities connected to it continue to thrive for generations to come.
