It is the time of the year when all the taxing districts in Texas go through the process of setting a new tax rate for your October bill.

The State Legislature sets the rules on how to calculate the rates.

Using last year’s values, rate and tax levy, we compare this year’s values and we calculate several rates for each kind of district.

Some of the rates we calculate are the no-new revenue rate, the debt rate, the voter-approval rate, and the de-minimus rate. Each rate gives the district a guideline or sets limits on what they can choose to fund their budget.

Depending on their choice, they are required to hold public hearings to allow taxpayers to voice their opinions. If they choose a higher rate than the calculated limits, they may have to hold an election for approval.

Once all the rates are set, the Tax Assessor will calculate the tax on each taxable property using the appraisal districts taxable values and the taxing entity’s rate. Bills are mailed in October and are due by the end of January.
