As we head into our second week of school, a reminder to watch for school buses and students on the road. Please slow down, stay alert and know when you’re required to stop for a school bus.

School buses are back on Washington roads! And that means it's time for a refresher on when to stop. 🚌🛑

During a single day in 2026, Washington school bus drivers reported 960 illegal passes. If that pace continued across the 180-day school year, it would amount to more than 172,000 violations.

With nearly 341,000 Washington students riding the bus each day, knowing the rules matters.

🛑Flashing red lights or stop arm out? STOP.
🛑On a two-lane road, traffic in both directions must stop.
🛑On roads with three or more marked lanes, drivers traveling in the opposite direction generally do not have to stop, but drivers traveling in the same direction as the bus always do.

Illegally passing a stopped school bus carries a mandatory $500 fine.

Check out the graphic for a quick guide and read our full press release here: https://ospi.k12.wa.us/about-ospi/news-center/news-releases/school-buses-are-back-know-when-stop to learn more about school bus safety, Washington's stopping laws, and what drivers should know as students head back to school.

When in doubt, stop!

Early Release Wednesdays Begin This Week

A reminder that Early Release Wednesdays begin this Wednesday, September 2, and will continue each Wednesday through June 9, 2027. On Early Release Wednesdays, schools dismiss one hour earlier than the regular schedule.

This time provides our teachers with dedicated time to collaborate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), where they work together to support student learning and success.

Please plan accordingly for the earlier dismissal. We look forward to a great week!

What a way to kick off the 2026–27 school year!

This morning, Longview Public Schools staff filled the R.A. Long Auditorium for our annual All-Staff Welcome Back—a morning of celebration, connection and a shared look toward the work ahead. We officially launched our new six-year Strategic Plan, heard an inspiring keynote from Dr. Tammy Campbell, welcomed new employees, and celebrated staff reaching 10, 20, 30 and 50 years of service.

And yes, you read that right—50 years! 🎉

Jim Rhodes was recognized for an incredible five decades of service to Longview Public Schools. Over those 50 years, Jim has helped deliver a LOT of meals to Longview students. Any guesses how many? 👀

A Back-to-School Safety Reminder for Our Community

With the first day of school just around the corner, now is a good time to get back into the habit of slowing down and staying alert around our schools and throughout our neighborhoods.

As students return, please slow down in school zones, watch carefully at crosswalks and intersections, and stay alert for students walking or biking to school or heading to and from their bus stops.

Thanks for helping keep our students safe as we return for a new school year. Please help us spread the message by sharing this reminder with others in our community. Thank you!
