RECYCLE YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE? For those that live in the city limits of Longview and have missed the notices about what to do with your Christmas tree, you have two options:

1. You can drive them over to the Longview Soccer parking lot on Seventh Avenue, now through January 2, 2022; or,

2. You can place your tree next to your garbage container the week of January 3-7, 2022. If your garbage cart is placed at the curb for collection, place it at the curb or if you have alley service, place your tree in the alley.

Waste Control will pick all of them that are placed out this coming week.

UPDATE. Waste Control has notified the city this morning that the latest snow fall has slowed them down and made some roads unserviceable at this time. They are doing their best as temperatures are above freezing.

Any extra garbage that you may have placed next to your containers, the collection driver will be picking it up while they are there. If we find an excessive amount, they will dispatch extra crew to assist. The city appreciates your patience as we work through these weather events.

REMINDER. Waste Control has prepared an app to assist in providing proper and more timely notification of anticipated disruption of garbage and/or recycling service, such as the recent snow event. This app will generate reminders for normal collection service, including approved curbside recycling materials and Christmas tree removal schedules, or anticipated delays or changes to service.

Go to the App Store on your phone and type in “WasteConnect” and download the app. Once you enter your address and accept the prompt to receive Notifications, you will receive service reminders and any needed updates from Waste Control.

For those that do not have access to a phone to download the app, these announcements will be aired on all local radio stations and published in the Daily News.

Until the snow and ice is no longer on our streets, please drive carefully. Stay safe and warm!

UPDATE. In speaking with Waste Control this morning, the garbage/recycling collection will have a late start at 8 am in the lower elevations. For the higher elevations, the road conditions still pose a challenge, but the drivers will be out using their judgement for accessibility.

We do apologize for any inconvenience during this weather event. If your garbage/recycling was missed earlier this week, please make sure any excess garbage is secured tightly and place next to your containers. Waste Control will pick these up when they arrive this next week.

Stay safe and warm.

With the recent snow accumulation in the Longview community, this is a reminder that Waste Control continues to focus on the safety of its employees, communities and property, particularly in the hillside areas. If you find that your garbage and recycling was not collected due to snow accumulation on your street, please know that Waste Control is aware of the streets that were not collected and will make every attempt to provide service as soon as it is safe to do so.

In a communication with Waste Control on Monday morning, Waste Control has indicated that any days not collected, they will provide service on the next scheduled day. If any residents have excess garbage as a result of the missed service, they can placed secured bags next to their garbage containers and the driver will see that everything is removed.

We apologize for any inconvenience this causes, but it is also important that these drivers stay safe.

Recycling is important! With our patience still running thin these days with all the craziness, I wanted to share this recycling video, a sketch from Portlandia. It focuses on the humor side of recycling, but the message is still the same: reduce, reuse, recycle... and one of my personal favorites - repurpose! Stay sane - and have a great day!

Shopping Carts, Go Home

They have been described in many ways. Most call them an indispensable convenience. When found in the park, on a sidewalk or on the street, some call them three-dimensional graffiti and signs of urban decay. Others, aesthetic blight. We all know them as shopping carts. The reality is that shopping cart theft and abandonment is a festering problem that seems to be getting worse in our community.

In May 2019, the City of Longview passed a shopping cart ordinance designed to help curb the problem of abandoned shopping carts scattered throughout the city.

Stolen and abandoned shopping carts pose a cost to us all. Cart loss and retrieval costs retail store thousands of dollars each year and that cost gets passed on to their customers. When left out in the community, abandoned shopping carts can impact public health and safety, obstruct free access to sidewalks and streets which can interfere with vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Cart abandonment also contributes to conditions of blight in the community that can reduce property values.

What you need to know: A section of the new shopping cart ordinance mirrors Washington State Law making it a misdemeanor for any person to remove a shopping cart from the premises of a store or to knowingly possess a shopping cart without the written permission of the store owner or the store owner’s authorized agent.

Rules & regulations at a glance: (LMC 7.34)
• Every shopping cart made available for use by customers is required to have a sign permanently affixed to it that includes contact information consistent with state law. Store owners will be subject to penalties for carts not retrieved after receiving notice from the city.
• Every store making more than 10 shopping carts available is required to submit to the city a “Shopping Cart Containment Plan” that will detail their efforts to keep shopping carts from unauthorized removal from their premises.
• Store owners are required to patrol and retrieve carts removed from their premises on all public streets within a half mile radius of the retail establishment every 72 hours.

Reporting abandoned carts - Every shopping cart made available for use by customers is required to have a sign permanently affixed to it that includes contact information consistent with state and city law. Please CONTACT CART OWNER FIRST! The stores contact information will be on the cart sign. If there is not a sign that provides store contact information or if the cart is not retrieved within 48 hours after contacting the store, contact the City via email at [email protected], by phone at 360-442-5093, or by using the Android or iPhone app “GoRequest”.

Contact us - For more information about the specific rules governing shopping carts, please call the Code Compliance Division at 442-5093. For a more detailed information, visit the City of Longview website at www.mylongview.com

* ANNOUNCEMENT *

Waste Control has prepared an app to assist in providing proper and more timely notification of anticipated disruption of garbage and/or recycling service, such as the recent snow event last month.

Please note: Waste Control said the app is still loading to go live and may still take another week or so, though most have already been successful in downloading the app.

For those that do not have access to a phone to download the app, these announcements will be aired on all local radio stations and published in the Daily News.

* SNOW ALERT *

For those hill areas that have garbage and recycling collection today and due to the current snow event, Waste Control will not be providing collection service. They will be keeping track of those areas that are missed and will go back to start getting the missed service as soon as it is safe to do so, likely beginning on Monday.

This will take a couple of days to catch up – along with the normal collection, but they y will do their best. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes, but it is also important that these drivers stay safe.

Thank you for your patience.

Happy New Year! We hope everyone is staying warm and safe!

We recently published a one page ad about recycling. We hope you have seen it and found it helpful. As always, if you have a question about recycling, perhaps clarification about what is or is not recyclable, please drop us a note on this FB site.

I did receive a call regarding one item spotted on the front page - where it shows one of those plastic (square) containers for kitty litter. These are not a No. 1 or 2, and therefore are not recyclable. However, there are great containers to be "reused" around the house or in your garage or shop. We apologize for this error.

In the meantime, we recognize how unprecedented things have been these past ten months. Please do your part to keep yourself and your families safe.
