Weekend Apartment Fire – Chateau Pegues Apartments #25
Longview, TX — On May 30, 2026, at approximately 6:44 p.m., the Longview Fire Department responded to a reported apartment fire at Chateau Pegues Apartments #25, located at 1600 Seventh Street in Longview.
Upon arrival, crews encountered a two-story apartment building with a large volume of black smoke coming from an apartment unit. The incident was declared a working fire, and evacuation of the building was initiated due to the conditions encountered.
Firefighters initiated fire attack, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul operations. The fire was quickly brought under control using on-scene resources.
Smoke alarms were present, functioning properly, and successfully alerted occupants to the fire. One person sustained injuries and was treated at the scene before being transported to a local hospital. One occupant was displaced as a result of the incident, and the American Red Cross was contacted to provide assistance.
Following extinguishment, the Fire Marshal’s Office conducted an investigation. After scene documentation, witness interviews, and evaluation of burn patterns, investigators determined the area of origin to be the stovetop. The fire was determined to be accidental and caused by unattended cooking. Estimated property damage is approximately $75,000.
The Longview Fire Department responded with five fire engines, two ladder trucks, two ambulances, and four support vehicles.
