FANTASTIC NUMBERS SO FAR!
Please keep helping us grow those numbers and share the news that registration for Summer Reading Club is open.

No matter what age you are, there’s always something fun and exciting for you at the library.

Maybe it’s watching your kids choose a prize after you read your favorite story together, or maybe it’s attending a program with family/friends to spend a morning together.

Come “Unearth A Story” with us this year, and discover what that fun thing is for yourself.

• Kids and Teens, Ages 0 - 17:

Guardians can register you online via Beanstack, or come inside to the children’s desk for assistance, and you can opt in for a paper reading log to use.

Our Summer Kick-off Party will be held on June 5, here at the library from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM.
The first week of prize redemption and daily SRC events/activities begins June 8.

• Adults:
Ages 18+ can register online and log all reading through Beanstack as well!

You’re also welcome to register in-person at the library front desk if you plan to use paper tickets for the weekly raffle and skip the online option.

Adults can pick up a free goodie bag at the library when pre-registered, May 1 - June 1. While supplies last!

Memorial Day history spotlight:

Memorial Day originated in 1868 after the American Civil War to honor Union soldiers that died in battle, and was originally called “Decoration Day.”

The global world wars further impacted it into a day of remembrance, and later became a federal U.S. holiday in 1971, when Congress standardized the name to “Memorial Day” and changed the official calendar observation day (the last Monday in May).

We looked into our newspaper microfilm archives and found copies of the May - 1971, Longview Morning Journal.

The May 30, 1971 - Sunday edition had a variety of articles, images, ads, and other Memorial Day-related information that was relevant for the time.

Please stop by if you ever want to get assistance with these archives to do more research about Memorial Day, veteran’s affairs, ancestry, or war/military-related topics. We’re happy to help,

We honor and remember all those who gave their lives to serve and protect our country.

Have a safe holiday, and we’ll reopen tomorrow for normal business hours/operations!

Our second display case has something special inside this month…a time capsule from the East Texas Chamber of Commerce!

The organization was formed in 1926.
On March 24, 1926, they met on the courthouse lawn and decided to commemorate the spot with a time capsule and marker when their 50th anniversary came about.

The first board meeting was held in Longview on April 19, 1926.

The time capsule was placed in the ground on April 8, 1976, to mark the first 50 years of the chamber’s efforts to encourage industrial, agricultural, and tourism development in the surrounding seventy-one East Texas counties.

It was opened in April this year on the organization's 100th anniversary.

The chamber has since merged into the Texas Chamber of Commerce in 1988, and subsequently, that organization merged into the Texas Association of Business in 1995.

The time capsule contains various East Texas Chamber of Commerce and Longview memorabilia, photos, and artifacts.

Come stop by and see a bit of local history before it swaps out at the end of the month.

We also encourage you to utilize our local history room and work with the genealogy librarian on any research and ancestry projects that you might have come into your life!
