Seminole County Environmental Studies Center The Environmental Studies Center is a Seminole County Public Schools facility. Johns River watershed.

Located in Soldiers Creek Park, part of Spring Hammock Preserve, a partnership between the School Board and Seminole County Government creates a unity that benefits school programs and the general community. The Center is best known for the traditional 5th grade Mud Walk; a unique field trip that allows students to explore and investigate habitats that are part of the Lake Jessup wetlands and St.

The Natural History Museum and surrounding pavilions provide outdoor classrooms for scheduled field trips during the school week. Students also take part in standards-based lessons while on their field trips. New in 2013, is a 3rd grade field trip that takes students on an exploration of the surrounding habitats. Included in these field trips is a professional development component for teachers. Soldiers Creek Park trails and boardwalks wind through five natural habitats to a spectacular view of Lake Jessup. The park is open daily to the public from sunrise and sunset.

KICK OFF THE NEW YEAR ON THE TRAIL: Join us for a FREE First Day Hike on January 1, 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. at Spring Hammock Preserve. Enjoy an easy, guided hike with Natural Lands staff as we explore the preserve’s beautiful habitats.

✔️ Ages 7+ (children must be with an adult)
✔️ Hike Rating: EASY

NOW OPEN: The Osprey Trailhead access to Spring Hammock Preserve (off FL-419) is now open to the public following recent restoration work.

Residents can now enjoy new extended boardwalks, a refreshed mudwalk, and new concrete stairs.

UPDATE 6/20/25: Osprey Trailhead will remain closed for an additional three weeks to complete the restoration work. Crews anticipate opening the trailhead in mid-July. Please note that work schedules are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

TRAIL CLOSURE: The Osprey Trailhead access to Spring Hammock Preserve (off FL-419) will be closed beginning Friday, May 30, for restoration work.

The closure is expected to last approximately two weeks. To find alternate trailheads and routes, visit www.seminolecountyfl.gov/parks.

UF/IFAS recommends against using cypress mulch in the landscape because the source is often undisclosed and cypress trees generally grow in wetlands. Choose pine bark, pine straw, leaves, melaleuca mulch or utility mulch instead.
