Lorain Fire is proud to recognize Angelique Flores as an Honorary Firefighter today!

Her quick actions this morning mitigated what could have been a much larger issue. HFF Angelique saw dirty rags smoldering due to a chemical reaction. Without hesitation, or concern for her own safety, she then submerged them in a nearby mop bucket filled with water.

The water cooled the rags and stifled the chemical reaction thereby preventing what would have been a larger fire.

Thank you for your bravery Angelique, we’re so proud to have you aboard!

Black River Water Rescue

Wednesday evening around 6:30pm, a report was made of a person in distress in the Black River. One victim was located about 50 yards offshore and rescue swimmers were deployed. The victim was taken to shore and was transferred to LifeCare. The victim was then taken to Mercy Hospitals.

This evening at 7:09 LFD crews were dispatched to a small fishing vessel in distress. Upon arrival the LFD boat crew made contact with the boater, wherein he stated that he had engine trouble and his boat was inoperable.

Waves this evening were 3-5’ after the storm that blew through. Firefighters were able to provide the boaters with a safe tow back to their dock.

No injuries occurred, the boat was not damaged.

LFD Was dispatched to a structure fire today on Elyria between 26th and 25th.

Crews arrived to find mainly the second story balcony in flames. Extinguishment of the main body of fire was achieved quickly. No injuries to firefighters, residents, or pets.

Local 267 members were happy to participate in the City of Lorain, OH’s annual Foam Party during last week’s brutal heat.

This week, members of LFD are participating in a water rescue course. Below are some photos from the course as well as a photo of one of our supporters.

We would like to thank the Manager of the Lorain Meijer, TJ Hunter, who graciously donated lunches for our members participating in the course. TJ is always willing to go above and beyond in his support of us. Thank you TJ!

Earlier this week we had a promotion ceremony to fill a vacancy left by a retirement.

Congratulations to Captain Bret Brown! Captain Brown has been assigned to Platoon 1.

On June 2nd, LFD responded to a report of smoke in the house in the Lakeview Park Neighborhood. Crews discovered a minor fire in a planter box that extended to the house. Crews overhauled to make sure the fire was limited to only to the area of origin.

This was the second fire in 24 hrs attributed to burning in a flower pot. Remember, while it won’t spontaneously combust, potting soil is flammable.

At Aproximately 0900hrs yesterday, LFD received multiple calls for a structure fire on the City’s far west side. Crews encountered a deck fire that quickly spread to the house. The fire spread into the first floor and into the attic. Due to the amount of fire, Elyria Fire Department was requested to the scene for assistance. Although the house suffered severe damage, crews did a great job keeping the fire from spreading to neighboring houses.

As a reminder, do not grill or use smokers on a decks or closer than 10’ from combustible structures.
