The Lorain County Democratic Party is deeply saddened by the passing of Donald J. Rothgery, a lifelong Elyria resident whose kindness, dedication, and commitment to public service touched generations in our community.

Don devoted much of his life to serving others. A proud graduate of Elyria Catholic High School and a veteran of the United States Navy aboard the USS Intrepid, he carried that spirit of service home with him and continued it throughout his career. Over the years, he served the people of Elyria and Lorain County in many roles, including Lorain County Clerk of Courts of Common Pleas, Clerk of Elyria Municipal Court, Clerk of Council, Councilman-at-Large, and Deputy Auditor. In every position, he was known for his integrity, humility, and genuine care for the people he served.

Beyond public office, Don was a devoted husband to Marcia for sixty-five years, a loving father and grandfather, and someone who cherished time with family. He had a gift for storytelling, a love of travel, and a knack for fixing just about anything. Most of all, he will be remembered for his warmth, his steady presence, and the way he treated others with kindness and respect.

Don’s legacy is one of service, community, and family. He helped shape Elyria and Lorain County through decades of dedication, and his impact will not be forgotten.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Marcia, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the entire Rothgery family. Our community is better because of Don’s life and service, and he will be greatly missed.
