Flashing lights ahead? Move over or slow down.

New Mexico’s Move Over Law requires drivers approaching stationary emergency, tow, utility, or highway maintenance vehicles with flashing or hazard lights to safely move into a lane away from the stopped vehicle.

When changing lanes is unsafe or impossible, reduce your speed below the posted limit and proceed with caution.

This law protects police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, tow truck operators, utility workers, and highway crews working alongside our roads. Give them the space they need to do their jobs safely.

Yesterday evening, Hidalgo County Fire Department was dispatched to a train derailment near the I-10 corridor at the 34-mile marker. Approximately 50 cars derailed.

The derailment is believed to have been caused by strong winds from a storm that passed through the area but the cause is still to be determined. Fortunately, there was no immediate threat to the public, and personnel remained on scene until the area was secured.
