Great discussion today at our board retreat. A balanced approach is needed and was agreed on today.

Horry County Schools Superintendent Clifford Jones led a board retreat on Wednesday, April 29, that talked about less screen time and technology usage for HCS students.

The Horry County Board of Education ("Board") seeks to fill a vacancy in its membership for the seat representing the unexpired term for District 5. The vacancy shall be filled by appointment of the Board until the 2028 General Election, at which time a member will be elected from District 5 for the new term which is from 2028 to 2032.

Mr. Hayes and his team are doing an outstanding job fostering a community of service and learning. As a result—scores are up, and students are growing and reaching their goals!

Great to see our state legislators today. Tracy Winters HCS District 3, Janet Graham HCS District 7 and myself, were at The South Carolina School Boards Association’s (SCSBA) 2026 Day at the Capitol with school board members from across the state that was held today. We were debriefed on key legislative priorities. From the K-12 state spending plan and parental leave expansion to school crossing guards directing traffic and optional insurance participation, and more.
It was great to engage lawmakers on issues impacting public education. .

Congratulations to both Aynor and Loris High!

Congratulations to Loris High School and Aynor High School on becoming Cognia STEM Certified Schools! The Lions and Blue Jackets bring the number of STEM Certified HCS high schools up to ten!

To become STEM Certified, schools must meet standards set by Cognia, a non-profit education accreditation and assessment agency. STEM Certified schools provide students with a comprehensive science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education that integrates various disciplines, encourages collaborative inquiry and self-directed learning, and prepares students for future academic and professional pursuits.

On Monday, we had the honor of welcoming South Carolina State Superintendent of Education, Ellen Weaver, to Ocean Bay Middle School. 📚✨ We were also proud to have Ken Richardson join us, representing the 15th Judicial Circuit for the South Carolina Department of Education. Both were actively engaged with students, asking great questions that students were eager to answer! ✅

A special thank you to Principal Marcus Timmons for the warm welcome and for leading such an incredible school community.

After visiting at Ocean Bay Middle State Superintendent Weaver, HCS School Superintendent Cliff Jones , myself and several executive staff went over to AAST.
There we listened to 12 students describe their majors and the impact that their decisions to come to AAST had had on their lives and future careers going forward. All of them had tested and passed certifications with many having more than 10 on their resume. SC State Superintendent Weaver posed follow up questions to each student and their responses were very well spoken and informative. Each of them are outstanding students in their majors. Following the discussions and lunch we went for classroom visits. Great engagement was seen in every classroom. Not only was content being taught but students were getting hands on learning as well. A special thank you to Principal Kelly Wilson for being such a great host for lunch, for this visit, and highlighting all the wonderful opportunities at her school so well.

Moments like Monday remind me how fortunate we are to have strong leadership, passionate educators, and students eager to learn. Thank you to everyone at Ocean Bay Middle and AAST for making the day so special! 🌟
