This past Wednesday, we engaged in a powerful dialogue celebrating the shared legacy of Tougaloo College and Alcorn State University. Institutional Historian Tony A. Bounds and English Professor J. Janice Coleman highlighted how Tougaloo graduates and trustees became trailblazers at Alcorn, demonstrating the deep interconnectedness of our institutions. Together, we are reminded that HBCU history is not separate, but historically united through leadership, resilience, and a shared commitment to excellence.

We had a great conversation last week reflecting on the history of Prospect Hill Plantation in Jefferson County, MS, with Roscoe Barnes from Visit Natchez. Our very own librarian, Marsha Belton, has a historical lineage tracing back to someone who was enslaved at this plantation.

At Alcorn State University, Black history is more than a celebrationβ€”it is our legacy.

As the nation’s first public, historically Black, land-grant university, we stand on the shoulders of giants who dared to dream. From 1871 to now, our story has been written by resilience, excellence, and community.

We honor the trailblazers of our past and the innovators defining our future. This month, and every month, we celebrate the power of our heritage.

Today, Alcorn State University honors the life, legacy, and enduring vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As we reflect on his dream, we are reminded that our pursuit of excellence extends beyond the classroom. It is found in our service to others, our commitment to justice, and our unity as a community.

Let us take this day to not only remember his sacrifice but to embody his teachings in our daily lives.
