Today, CAAS got a WORD! And we may have needed it more than we realized.

During our 2026 Fall CAAS-Wide Meeting, Ms. Amanda O’Quinn challenged us to show up motivated, give our best, speak positivity, help one another, and remember that each of us has a role in moving the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences forward. It was a message that set the tone for the entire meeting and the year ahead.

We also celebrated some of our own! Congratulations to Dr. Frank Mrema on his promotion to Associate Professor and Dr. Tahir Rashid on his promotion to Professor. We are proud to recognize their accomplishments and continued contributions to CAAS and Alcorn State University.

And what is a CAAS gathering without a little fun? We gave away a few door prizes, welcomed some new faces who represent the future of our college and celebrated the familiar faces, our “vets,” who continue to pour their knowledge and experience into our students, programs and communities year after year.

One of those familiar faces deserves a special shoutout. Ms. Manola Erby has dedicated 45 years of service to Extension, helping advance Alcorn State University’s land-grant mission and serving generations of Mississippians. Forty-five years of service is something worth celebrating!

From Extension to the Department of Agriculture, Department of Human Sciences, and Department of Advanced Technologies, CAAS was in the building today.

We left fired up, motivated, reinvigorated, and ready for what’s ahead.

New faces. Familiar faces. One college. One mission.

The 2026-2027 year is here, and CAAS is ready to Grow Beyond Boundaries as we Inspire. Innovate. Impact.

Senior Spotlight: De'Breylon Lee

As we continue recognizing our outstanding 2026 4-H graduates, we're highlighting De'Breylon Lee of Pike County 4-H.

A graduate of South Pike High School and Valedictorian of the Class of 2026, De'Breylon is continuing his academic journey at Morehouse College this fall.

A dedicated 4-H member for 13 years, De'Breylon credits the program with providing countless opportunities for growth and leadership. His favorite 4-H experiences included participating in the Archery/Shooting Sports program and attending the 4-H Ignite Youth Summit, where he strengthened his leadership skills and personal development.

One of the most valuable lessons De'Breylon gained through 4-H is simple but powerful: "Your experience is what you make it." He extends special thanks to his longtime 4-H agent and now Extension Specialist, Dr. Don, for years of encouragement, mentorship, and inspiration.

His advice to younger 4-H members:
"Take advantage of any and all opportunities given to you, and enjoy every second of them."

We are proud of all De'Breylon has accomplished and congratulate him on graduating as Valedictorian. We wish him continued success as he begins this exciting new chapter at Morehouse College and look forward to seeing all he achieves in the future.

Senior Spotlight: Calvineisha Nichole Barber

As we continue recognizing our outstanding 2026 4-H graduates, we're highlighting Calvineisha Nichole Barber of Claiborne County 4-H.

A graduate of Port Gibson High School, Calvineisha is continuing her educational journey at The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), where she plans to pursue a career as a registered nurse.

During her four years in 4-H, Calvineisha enjoyed participating in community service projects and working alongside fellow 4-H members to make a positive impact in her community. Through competitions, service activities, and hands-on learning experiences, she developed leadership skills while creating lasting friendships and memories.

Calvineisha says 4-H taught her the importance of responsibility, perseverance, teamwork, and believing in herself, even when stepping outside of her comfort zone. She extends special thanks to her family, Ms. Jerrie Jackson, and her fellow 4-H members for their encouragement, support, and inspiration throughout her journey.

Her advice to younger 4-H members:
"Never be afraid to try something new. Step outside of your comfort zone, stay positive, work hard, and enjoy every opportunity. 4-H is more than winning ribbons. It's about growing as a leader, making memories, and building friendships that last a lifetime."

We are proud of all Calvineisha has accomplished and wish her continued success as she begins this exciting new chapter at The University of Mississippi. We know she will continue making a positive difference in the lives of others.

Senior Spotlight: Kaitlyn Nicole Banks

As we continue recognizing our outstanding 2026 4-H graduates, we're highlighting Kaitlyn Nicole Banks of Claiborne County 4-H.

A graduate of Port Gibson High School, Kaitlyn is continuing her educational journey at The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.

Kaitlyn has been a dedicated member of 4-H since 2016, beginning her journey at just 8 years old. One of her favorite memories was representing Mississippi in Washington, D.C., during the 4-H Ignite Program. She also enjoyed serving as a staff leader during the Alcorn State University 4-H GO GREEN Summer Day Camp, where she designed and led her own educational activity station for younger campers.

Through 4-H, Kaitlyn developed a passion for leadership, community service, and mentoring the next generation. She extends special thanks to Ms. Jerrie Jackson for her unwavering encouragement, dedication, and commitment to youth throughout her 4-H experience.

Her advice to younger 4-H members:
"Keep going. Stick with the program that helps you grow. Over the years, you will learn new things about yourself, make new friends, and discover many opportunities the world has to offer."

Senior Spotlight: Amber-Lauren Wells

As we continue recognizing our outstanding 2026 4-H graduates, we're shining the spotlight on State 4-H Ambassador Amber-Lauren Wells of Claiborne County 4-H.

A graduate of Port Gibson High School, Amber-Lauren is continuing her educational journey at Tougaloo College after 11 years of involvement in 4-H.

One of her favorite 4-H memories was traveling to Washington, D.C., where she met fellow 4-H members from around the world and connected with agricultural leaders. She also enjoyed helping lead a two-day summer cooking class, mentoring younger 4-H'ers as they learned to prepare healthy pizza.

Amber-Lauren says 4-H taught her the importance of building meaningful connections and developing as a leader.

Her advice to younger 4-H members:
"Get more involved in 4-H activities because the connections you make and the people you meet can open many opportunities and make a lasting impact."

We are proud of all Amber-Lauren has accomplished and look forward to seeing all she achieves in this next chapter. Best wishes as she continues her journey at Tougaloo College!
