Tucked near the Laurel Hill Golf Course are the Laurel Hill Community Garden Plots. The plots were built in partnership with Fairfax County in 2023. This is our fourth growing season at the garden! A few weeks ago, our three primary garden volunteers, Zita, Nannette, and Stephanie, showed Director of Communications, Sofia, around the raised garden beds. There is at least one volunteer at the garden almost every day of the week. This year, they are growing a wide variety of produce, including okra, squash, eggplants, peppers, tomatoes, beans, and more!
One of the most impressive things Sofia learned was the thoughtfulness put into every step of the gardening process. When deciding what to plant, they consider which vegetables or herbs are found in our clients' cultures. The garden plots also do not use chemical pesticides but instead rely on natural pest repellents like marigolds and basil to ensure that our pantry receives the freshest produce.
After Nannette gathered the harvest, the produce was brought to the food pantry and immediately offered to clients.
