State Delegate and Temple B’Nai Shalom member Kathy Tran delivered 996 boxes of mac & cheese from Temple B’Nai Shalom to LCAC's food pantry, enthusiastically received by LCAC's Executive Director Rob Rutland Brown. Each year, the temple creates a mac & cheese menorah through generous donations from their congregation, then donates the collected mac & cheese to LCAC’s food pantry. Shown here is part of the mac & cheese stacked high into a menorah creatively designed by Scott Kanowitz. Thank you all!

LCAC is a place where dreams and good health are realized, and we need your help to continue providing basic needs including food, emergency rent and utility assistance, and other programs.

Today LCAC, along with 20 other nonprofits, was recognized at the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meeting for our work of providing critical services to the community during the pandemic. The LCAC staff are grateful for this honor and for the countless volunteers and supporters who stepped up throughout the height of the pandemic so we could expand our food and rent assistance when it was needed most. Pictured here, Rob Rutland-Brown of LCAC and Keisha Dotson of Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services shared a moment to celebrate their joint successes in serving the community.

LCAC held two town halls this past week to learn from clients what types of programming they’d like to see from us in the future. We asked how LCAC could improve, and heard much about the great impact of LCAC on many lives. One food-related message that was repeated: folks don’t want canned goods (too much sodium) and they love their vegetables. We’re on it! Stay tuned as we continue the conversation and share what our clients are saying. Their voices will help shape our work in the months ahead.

Bring food to donate to LCAC and head to a scary haunted house event at the Workhouse Arts Center, now through Saturday, November 5th on Fridays and Saturdays 7-11 pm and
Sundays 7-10 pm.

In the Rizer Pavilion, 9518 Workhouse Way, Lorton VA 22079.

Food and beverages will be available each night; live music is scheduled on specific dates. Tickets for this event are limited and are being sold for specific time slots. Advanced purchase is highly recommended--many dates are expected to sell out completely.

Our Director of Client Services got called last weekend by Fairfax County because a client of LCAC had just had her electric power shut off. She had an urgent need for help to get her power reconnected, with two young children at home, especially since it was cold that weekend. LCAC made an emergency pledge and got her electricity fully restored. We followed up with her the next weekday and are now working with her to become more self-sufficient.

We were able to help her because of your generous support. LCAC's flexibility means we can act swiftly to help our clients in emergency times like this. LCAC's Fall Appeal is underway, and if you can help, we can do even more. Donate now to support LCAC's Fall Appeal and help us make a difference, at our website or here: https://lortonaction.networkforgood.com/projects/170278-support-lcac-work-and-mission

BULK FOOD DELIVERIES AND FOOD RESCUE OPERATIONS TODAY AT LCAC - Food going to homeless shelters, fire stations and local neighborhoods from LCAC today. Weekly volunteer Eric, and friends Jeremiah and Kirah (shown here), facilitate extending the range of food distribution of LCAC. They deliver valuable bulk produce packages like huge bags of kale and carrots to local homeless shelters. Eric, Jeremiah and Kirah prevent waste as they rescue food donations that come to us with a short remaining shelf-life, by making same-day pickups and distributions. Jeremiah and Kirah also preserve food through canning and dehydration for neighbors.

This photo provides a visual testament to the long history of LCAC working in the community. At the same time, it highlights the organizing efforts and rejuvenation involved in the move to the new Lorton Community Center. While we are following an established and careful policy and process of document retention, we are ready to purge many papers in preparation for our move. This pile will leave the LCAC office and go to shredding today.

Be sure to stop in Lorton's Attic Thrift Store tomorrow!
As we move through the month of March and are coming off of International Women's Day, we all have hopefully taken some time to reflect on the important women in our lives.

We wanted to take this opportunity to shine a spotlight on an important woman to us, with a profound legacy, Christine Montgomery Herbstreith.

Christine lived in Lorton, not far from where we are located, for over 60 years. A member of Cranford United Methodist Church and a Chairperson of the Democratic Women of Northern Virginia, Christine was passionate about giving back to her community.

In 1975, after noticing a major need for food and clothing assistance in the community, Christine co-founded Lorton Community Action Center (Lorton Community Information Center at the time). As awareness spread and more community members got involved, LCAC began to flourish. Christine eventually stepped into the role of Director, where she continued to serve for over 20 years.

Today, her legacy lives on in all the staff, volunteers and community members who continue to make achieving our mission possible. Most notably, her grandaughter, Pam Chase, serves on the LCAC Board of Directors.

We are grateful for Christine and her contribution, which enabled us to be here, still serving families, almost 50 years later.

WOW! really surprised us with the amazing food drive for our pantry. A whopping 2,463 pounds valued at $4,408! One helper, a cute little guy carried in multiple cans. ❤️
Imagine having your form of heat cut off during one of the coldest weeks in February. Jane came home from work and her son came home from school to find out that they were without electricity and their heat! This family of three reached out to LCAC and we were able in less than 6 hours to get their electricity turned back on. Jane was grateful and is looking forward to the financial class that LCAC helped to get her in. YOUR support helps make things like this possible. Thank you!! YOU make this possible!
A HUGE thank you to our friends J.Crew Fair Oaks who held their annual coat collection for LCAC. More than 79 coats were received thanks to their efforts! These coats will go out to LCAC families over the coming weeks.
Thank you to our current 2022 gala sponsors!
