On 15 November 2014 over 30 Soldiers and family members of 11th
Battalion Army Reserve Careers Division gave of their time, effort, energy
and fundraising skills to join over 3000 other walkers in the 2014 Step Out to
Stop Diabetes Walk in Los Angeles. The Step Out Walks are the signature fundraising
activity of the American Diabetes Association. As the Commander of 11th
Battalion I was surprised to learn how many family members, to include my
wife Demauri who has been living with this disease for over twenty years,
are dealing with diabetes.
Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or
properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar,
starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of
diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental
factors appear to play roles.
The 11th Battalion Step Out Team - pictured here, sporting their team
t-shirts- raised over $300.00 for a great cause. Although the amount raised might be
small, it will still make a big impact on the efforts to stop diabetes.
The mighty 11th Battalion Conquistadors Soldiers and family members had a
great time helping to fight and eventually beat diabetes one step at a time.
