Sunburst sails through 2026 Annual Training with the help of U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy!

The 40th Infantry Division, alongside U.S. Marine and Navy Assault Craft Unit FIVE, executed a multi-domain operation integrating land, maritime, and air assets to demonstrate seamless joint force interoperability during 40th ID's Annual Training June 1-16, 2026.

By synchronizing fires, logistics, and maneuver across these domains, the units proved their ability to operate as a unified front.

🌴💪 A first for the Fortieth. 🌟🇺🇸

The 40th Infantry Division held its first Jungle Operations Training Course assessment, giving Sunburst Soldiers the opportunity to test their readiness, endurance and tactical skills for one of the Army’s most demanding training environments.

JOTC is a two-week course taught by Lightning Academy, 25th Infantry Division, at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. The course follows a crawl-walk-run progression and trains service members in jungle mobility, waterborne operations, combat tracking, land navigation, jungle tactics and survival before culminating in a squad-level field training exercise and the Green Mile endurance event.

From California to San Clemente Island, the Sunburst Division is opening new lanes, raising the standard and preparing Soldiers to fight, win and lead in any environment.

The Sunburst’s Division Tactical Command Post surfs back home!

After 10 days of training at San Clemente Island, the DTAC successfully broke down and traveled back to Oceanside, from San Clemente Island, June 11, 2026.

Using Landing Crafts Air Cushion manned by the U.S. Navy Assault Craft Unit 5, 40th ID troops and equipment were transported back to Camp Pendleton and then made their way back to the 40th Infantry Division Headquarters at Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos.

California Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 40th Infantry Division conducted SPOT and SALUTE report training during a Soldier Skill Level 10 refresher course at San Clemente Island, California, June 10, 2026.

Led by Sgt. 1st Class Kevin Young, the training reinforced tactical battlefield reporting, communication and observation skills Soldiers use to share accurate information in fast-moving field environments.

The refresher strengthened individual readiness while supporting the division’s ability to operate as a unified force alongside U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy elements during Annual Training 26. ⚔️☀️

Soldier Speaks: Sergeant Dru C. Harrell, Vehicle Mechanic with Headquarters and Support Company, 40th Infantry Division

“I do this to provide for my family.”

24 year old Harrell serves his country in and out of uniform. A married man, and father of one with one on the way, Harrell says family is the most important thing to him. He is a Federal Technician, meaning he works as a civilian government employee, surface maintenance mechanic, most days and serves his country as California National Guard Soldier with 40th Infantry Division as a vehicle mechanic.

“I originally wanted to go school but did not know what I wanted to do, so I joined the National Guard,” Harrell said.

A Clovis, California- native, and graduate of Buchanan High School, Harrell said his favorite part of serving in the National Guard is the friends he has made along the way.

“My best friends are guys I met in the Recruit Sustainment Program,” Harrell said. “We have gone to the same schools and are located in the same area.”

Ultimately, he said, he does it for his wife and children.

“I am lucky enough to pay for my wife’s education and provide a good life for my family,” said Harrell. “It is the most important thing to me!”

🩺🪖 Training to save lives in the field.

U.S. Army Spc. Alberto Panduro, a combat medic assigned to Headquarters and Support Company, 40th Infantry Division, California Army National Guard, conducted medical training during Annual Training 26 at San Clemente Island, California, June 6, 2026.

Operating from the Battalion Aid Station at the Division Tactical Command Post, Panduro practiced IV transfusion procedures and blood typing as part of a field medical exercise. The training helps medics maintain readiness to provide trauma care, monitor medical readiness and support Soldiers in mobile, fast-paced environments.

Soldier Spotlight | Spc. Alberto Panduro

"The Guard was the better choice. No regrets. It gave me discipline, responsibility and maturity. My family saw the change, and that made everyone happy.

As a combat medic assigned to Headquarters and Support Company, Spc. Alberto Panduro plays a vital role in keeping Soldiers healthy, hydrated and mission-ready during Annual Training.

A native of City of Downey - Government, California, Panduro joined the California Army National Guard to challenge himself, develop discipline and remain close to home so he could continue supporting his family. Encouraged by a friend in the infantry who told him, "We always need a good medic," he chose to become a 68W Combat Medic and has embraced the responsibility of caring for fellow Soldiers.

During Annual Training, Panduro provided medical support and helped ensure water sanitation standards were maintained for his team, helping safeguard the health and readiness of the force.

The skills and experiences he has gained through military service have also inspired his future goals. Drawing on what he has learned in the California National Guard, Panduro plans to pursue a nursing program and continue serving others both in and out of uniform.
