Old bank statements. Expired insurance cards. Tax returns from 2001.
That’s what filled the boxes that rolled through the Community Center parking lot today. Almost 100 cars lined up for our Annual Community Shred Event, and every sheet went into a certified shred truck right in front of its owner. By the time the truck pulled out, roughly 2,000 pounds of personal information had been turned into confetti instead of sitting in a garage waiting for the wrong person to find it.
Identity thieves don’t need to hack your computer when a recycling bin will do. One old statement can hold your name, address, account number and signature. Shredding it is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself, and we’re glad so many of you came out to do just that.
While you were cleaning out your files, we were doing the same at City Hall. Monday, October 12, 2026, was our annual Records Management Day, which is why City Hall was closed to the public. Staff spent the day sorting, indexing and properly storing City records so they’re easier to find when you ask for them.
We get asked about this, so here’s the short version: managing records doesn’t mean making them disappear. The City follows a records retention schedule approved by the City Council and guided by California law. Some records are kept for a set number of years. Others, like Council minutes, resolutions and ordinances, are kept permanently. Nothing is destroyed ahead of schedule or without going through that approval process. Good records management is what lets us hand you a complete public record quickly when you request one.
