HOUSING SCAM ALERT!

College students looking for apartments be on the lookout for scams! There is a person using the name Marcia Nancy King advertising apartment rentals for students and short-term renters. This person is out to steal your money! Protect yourself from losing a significant amount of money:
Be suspicious of anyone who asks for money for a site unseen rental. A video is not proof of legitimacy!
Do not send money via bank wire transfer to anyone! Money sent by wire is not refundable from your bank.
Carefully exam any paperwork sent to you. Marcia Nancy King sends a photocopy of a driver's license that has been photoshopped.
Don’t sign any rental agreements or send any money until you have seen the property in person and have keys in hand.
Marcia Nancy King will try to cancel your contract and ask for your bank information to wire a refund. This is a scam to gain access to your bank account! Do not give your account details to anyone!
Use your internet sleuthing skills to verify names, property addresses, and ownership. The resources are there!

If you have already been hit by this scam, please go file a police report and report it to your bank. These scams work because victims are embarrassed to file complaints. Your bank can attach flags to scammers names that will make it possible for bank tellers to warn others before they too lose money. Be a good neighbor & report these thieves!

As most of you know by now 3 of our families were left homeless by fire in the Rancho Alamo Trailer Park. One of these families was our very own Laura Beas-Diaz. Laura and Joel have both put in countless hours of service to our community. They were instrumental in getting food, heaters, blankets and more to those in need during the pandemic. Laura has also helped with rent assistance, emergency EBT, medical appoints, translation, etc. through her work with The Los Alamos Foundation and Olga Reed School. It is really no surprise then that the Los Alamos community has jumped at the chance to give back to Laura and her family. For this, we are all extremely grateful and deeply touched. Not everyone gets to live in such a warm and sheltering community. We are truly blessed.

Several GoFundMe accounts have been established to help the Diaz family (https://gofund.me/5a791fd6)
Kim Budoff-Kapsh (https://gofund.me/e62d1ba1)
and Kris Valentine (https://gofund.me/1a242eb4)
It is important that we wrap our arms around Kim and Kris who have also lost everything. In a different set of circumstances Laura would be leading the charge for them, and, in fact, they are still top of mind for her. So, let’s put Laura’s mind at ease and go deep for Kim & Kris.

Below is information of the temporary living arrangements for Laura & family that were coordinated by Angela Osborne of “A Tribute to Grace,” along with items needed. Some of these may have already been secured so you may want to check with Angela first, especially for larger items. Kim Budoff-Kapsh & Kris Valentine will also need help getting set up and will benefit from these drop-offs.

Joel, Laura and family will be moving into a cottage in Santa Ynez. The cottage has three bedrooms, one large living room, kitchen, and one full bathroom. Diaz family consist of Joel, Laura, 15-year-old son, 9-year- old daughter, and Laura’s mother. Below are the most basic essential household items needed, if you have any of these items you would like to donate please let us know what items so we can check off and bring to the cottage on Monday.
If you have any other items that are not listed and would love to donate, please let us know and bring on over.
