๐Ÿ“… Every day counts. Every grade matters.

From elementary school through high school, regular attendance helps students stay connected, keep up with learning, and build habits that support their success.

As kids get older and become more independent, families still play an important role in helping them get to school and stay on track.

Hereโ€™s why showing up matters:

โœ… Missing just 2 days a month adds up. Thatโ€™s about 10% of the school year and can make it harder for students to keep up academically.

โœ… Attendance patterns matter early. By 6th grade, chronic absence is one of the strongest warning signs that a student may not graduate on time.

โœ… Absences can be a sign that something else is going on. Struggling with schoolwork, friendship issues, bullying, stress, or other challenges can sometimes show up as difficulty getting to school.

โœ… Showing up is a life skill. Regular attendance helps students build routines and habits theyโ€™ll carry into work, college, and adulthood.

A few things families can do:

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Talk about attendance. Let your child know that going to school is important and that you're there to help when something makes it difficult.

๐Ÿ˜ด Keep routines consistent. A regular bedtime, morning routine, and time for homework can make school days easier.

๐Ÿฉบ Plan appointments when you can. Whenever possible, schedule routine medical and dental appointments outside of school hours.

And if getting to school is hard, please reach out. Transportation, health concerns, housing, food, family circumstances, or other challenges can all affect attendance. You don't have to figure it out alone. Your student's teacher, school counselor, and principals are here to help.

You can also check your child's attendance through PowerSchool and reach out to their teacher or school staff with questions.

Every day counts. And we're in this together. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ’œ Overdose Awareness Day โ€” August 31

As parents and caregivers, we can help strengthen our community by staying informed, talking openly about substance use, and being prepared to respond when someone needs help.

A few things to know:

๐Ÿ”น An opioid overdose can cause someone to become unresponsive, have slow or stopped breathing, or make choking or gurgling sounds.

๐Ÿ”น When in doubt, treat it like an overdose. Acting quickly can save a life.

๐Ÿ”น Naloxone (Narcan) can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose and help restore breathing while emergency help is on the way.

๐Ÿ”น Anyone can carry and administer Narcanโ€”it does not require medical training.

๐Ÿ“ Free Narcan is available throughout Los Alamos and White Rock.

Tip Thursday ๐Ÿ’™

A little encouragement can go a long way!

Today, take a moment to write someone a quick note telling them what you appreciate about them or simply letting them know you are thinking of them.

It could be a student, teacher, coworker, friend, or family member. โœ‰๏ธ

You never know how much a few kind words might mean to someone. Who could use a little encouragement today? ๐Ÿ’™

Middle school brings big changes, big feelings, and sometimes big worries. ๐Ÿ’™

Feeling anxious from time to time is a normal response to stress. As Michelle Bane shares, watch for changes in sleep, eating, mood, or irritability that may be signs your child is feeling overwhelmed.

A few things that can help:
โœจ Focus on what they can control
โœจ Break big tasks into smaller steps
โœจ Practice coping skills like deep breathing, movement, or mindfulness
โœจ Keep the conversation open and judgment-free

Remind your child that they do not have to handle things alone. If they need extra support, their school counselor is a great place to start. ๐Ÿ’™
