The intern will represent Midpen at community events and workshops, develop content for social media and digital communications, collaborate with community partner organizations, and assist in the planning and ex*****on of public events. This internship provides training in a broad range of public affairs strategies and activities.

Another year, another incredible Volunteer Recognition Event! This past weekend, we gathered at Saratoga Springs to celebrate the people who make so much of Midden’s work possible, our amazing volunteers!

As always, they showed up, even in the heat, to celebrate each other and the incredible amount of time, energy and care they’ve poured into our preserves over the past year.

This past year, 711 volunteers across all programs contributed nearly 21,000 hours of their time, collectively providing the equivalent of 10 full-time positions through their dedication and hard work.

Whether you volunteer with us year-round or joined us for just one project, thank you. Every contribution to our mission of protection, preservation, education, and enjoyment makes a difference.”

Are you a teacher looking for an opportunity to get your students learning outdoors?

Midpen has an opening for a class to join us on October 29 for a Wildfire Science Field Trip at Skyline Ridge Preserve. Students will explore the preserve while learning about wildfire fuel reduction and fire safety as it relates to climate change mitigation.

There is NO COST for this field trip, which includes the trip experience and transportation services if requested.

- Open to a class of 7-12 graders
- Up to 30 students welcome
- Next Generation Science Standard aligned
- Deadline to book is October 15

Heads up! The Daniels Nature Center will be closed this Saturday, October 3 while our lovely volunteers celebrate their amazing contributions to Midpen's work during our annual Volunteer Recognition Event.

As always, the nearby trails are open for you to enjoy, and the facility will be open the following day from noon to 5 p.m.

If you can't make it on Sunday, the nature center is open on weekends until the last day of the season, Sunday, November 15. Come check out the space and meet knowledgeable nature center docents who will welcome you the Skyline Area!

It's officially FALL! 🍂

The autumnal equinox, a day of nearly equal sunlight for both the northern and southern hemisphere and the mark of a new season, took place yesterday.

Though the seasons have changed, we're still expecting some warm weather across the Santa Cruz mountains over the next couple of weeks, so make sure to prepare for your outings accordingly!

Mt. Umunhum Road is closed to the public, including cyclists, September 22-25, 2026 for roadside vegetation maintenance by Midpen staff. Sierra Azul Preserve trails and the Mt. Umunhum summit remain open but are only accessible via the Woods Trail which allows hiking, mountain biking and equestrian use. https://bit.ly/4Ap8OVH
