Mario used to live in a tent on the border of Westlake and Koreatown. After a few months in Inside Safe, Mario has moved in to a permanent place to call home. Street homelessness is down by 10% in the City of Los Angeles — Mario’s story is proof of that.
Homelessness is on the decline for the first time in YEARS, in part because of prevention efforts. Yesterday, we announced a new partnership to serve former foster youth – a group that disproportionately falls into homelessness. We must continue to take urgent action.
Valerie was sleeping on the streets until Inside Safe teams helped move her indoors and into immediate housing. Homelessness is down in Los Angeles and Valerie is just one of many Angelenos that has a permanent place to call home.
This is what happens when we partner with local state and national agencies to create long lasting solutions that save lives and bring more people indoors.
Reverend Lawson dedicated his life to equality and justice – helping train a generation of national leaders including, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Congressman John Lewis, in nonviolent protest. These teachings changed the course of history and now live on in each of us as we continue to push the needle on social and economic justice. We rejoice today for what’s to come in his honor.

“I fell to my knees and started crying.” That’s what it feels like for Angelenos to finally move into a PERMANENT home after sleeping on the streets for years. This is how we end the cycle of homelessness: with housing and services.
On days like today, it’s easy to forget that the numbers discussed are people just like Gilberto. No one deserves to sleep on our streets. We are proving there is momentum to change that.
We just got the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority count results. For the first time in SIX years, the number of unhoused Angelenos went DOWN. Street homelessness is down 10%. We must continue to work with urgency to save lives. There is hope in Los Angeles. mayor.lacity.gov/news/change-la-homelessness-down-city-la-first-time-years-following-urgent-action-taken-mayor-bass

Kevin was sleeping on the streets for almost 5 years. When Inside Safe teams were assessing areas in the Valley, Kevin and his family were able to come inside. “It was a blessing, they helped us with housing…my cousin, my girlfriend — and even my dog.”
All in one day — Angelenos are leaving encampments and moving indoors immediately while receiving supportive services that will help them transition away from homelessness. Inside Safe is cutting red tape and expediting the years-long process of getting people off the streets.
“It's a great opportunity, as soon as they mentioned it, I was already on board.” Inside Safe brings relief to people that have been living on the streets. No one wants to sleep on the sidewalks or near a freeway – Inside Safe keeps proving that.
Too often, there’s a perceived trade-off where landlords are forced to decide between making ends meet and providing affordable rent. Our partnership with the federal government and @HACLA1938 is making it easier for landlords to make that choice by guaranteeing pre-paid security deposits and incentives to help house more homeless Angelenos and maximize Section 8 vouchers. Thank you to those who joined us this week!
This is what partnership looks like. Metro Los Angeles and the City are working together to build more affordable housing with access to public transit – ensuring working families don't fall into homelessness and maximizing our resources by building housing with under-utilized city land.
