Anita Gelber MD

I’d like to introduce you to Anita Gelber (Frederich).

Born on October 1, 1895, Anita worked as a nurse for several years before going to medical school. She served the US Military as a nurse during WWI. As she told the LA Times much later:

“Why did I go? Well, I had just graduated from nursing school and they called me up and asked me to go. Being young and adventurous, I went. I was assigned to the Typhus Commission in Poland.

“But when the Bolsheviks shot down an American flyer, an older woman and I set off in an old car to get him out. We traveled through the Ukraine to Kiev, living in kibbutzes full of fleas – I couldn’t imagine why I kept scratching.

“But we brought the flier back with us.”

Her group later fled Warsaw. “I came back and went to medical school and got myself a husband along the way.”

Anita moved to Los Angeles after receiving her MD in Dermatology from Rush Medical College in 1927. She was active in the John Tracy Clinic, Queen of Angels Clinic and Research Foundation, Women’s Division of the Chamber of Commerce, LA County Museum of Art, and Women’s Overseas Service League as well as the Soroptimist Club of Los Angeles, which she joined on January 7, 1952 and remained a member until her death on August 5, 1972.

Soroptimist International of Los Angeles is proud to participate in Dream It, Be It Career Support for Girls. Since 2015, Dream It, Be It has given more than 98,000 girls worldwide the tools they need to achieve their education and career goals.

Far too many girls face barriers on the pathway to achieving their dreams. Obstacles such as poverty, teen dating violence, and teen pregnancy can get in the way of a girl's ability to make her dreams a reality. Dream It, Be It equips girls to overcome their obstacles, set goals, and head towards success.

Soroptimist International of Los Angeles is proud to participate in Dream It, Be It Career Support for Girls. Since 2015, Dream It, Be It has given more than 98,000 girls worldwide the tools they need to achieve their education and career goals.

By reaching girls while they are still young, we not only can help them stay healthy and safe in the short term, but we can reduce the number of women in crisis in the future. Putting them on a path will help them realize their dreams.

Once a quarter, we will focus on an obstacle that women and girls face on their path to formal education and economic empowerment. This quarter our focus is on period poverty.

Period poverty is the inability to afford or access menstrual products, hygiene facilities, and education to manage menstrual health.

What causes period poverty?
• Stigma: Cultural taboos and misconceptions about menstruation that lead to shame and misinformation.
• High Cost of Menstrual Products: Many women and girls cannot afford sanitary products due to financial constraints. They are taxed as luxury items in many places despite being a necessity.
• Lack of Water and Sanitation Facilities: Inadequate access to clean water and sanitation hampers proper menstrual hygiene management.

This lack of access in and of itself causes immense difficulty for women and girls in their everyday lives. As a result, girls may miss school and fall behind in their education, while women may miss work, affecting their income and economic opportunities.
