In 1984, Los Angeles hosted the Olympics for a second time (the first in 1932). Our Ichikawa Family Papers collection includes personal items related to the ‘84 games, such as newspaper clippings (note George Takei carrying the Olympic torch), polaroid pictures of the opening ceremony at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, and a postcard from Ruth Kikuko in Monterey Park (CA) to witness part of the Olympic Torch Relay.

The Ichikawas were a Japanese American family living in Los Angeles for most of the twentieth century. Parents Hideyuki Frances and Yasu Maria were born and raised near Mount Fuji in Japan and immigrated to California in the early 1920s, settling in Los Angeles. They had four children, including Ruth.

After Executive Order 9066 was issued in 1942, the Ichikawas were forcibly detained at the Pomona Assembly Center and then incarcerated at the Heart Mountain Relocation Center, an American concentration camp in Wyoming. After their release in 1945, the family returned to their home in south Los Angeles where they lived until their passing.

This collection displays many aspects of their lives, from their incarceration, to their schooling and work, to their many vacations and holidays spent together. The Ichikawa Family Papers features art work that the family kept in their home, scrapbooks and yearbooks documenting their lives, and photo albums which make up the bulk of the collection.

🏖️ 🏘️ Once upon a time, there was a community just south of Playa del Rey called “Surfridge.” Now abandoned, this beach-side neighborhood emerged in the 1920s and 1930s bolstered by advertising by the Dickinson & Gillespie Real Estate corporation. Our T.O. McCoye Papers collection contains photographs, negatives, maps, brochures, notary books, newspapers, and miscellaneous office materials related to Dickinson & Gillespie, and the overall development of the Playa Del Rey area in the 1920s-30s.
