What's up y'all! My name is Justin Rodriguez and I am the 2020-2021 USAC General Representative. Before running for office, I was an organizer in the Student Labor Advocacy Project and MEChA de UCLA. In my time at UCLA, I have both faced a lot of challenges and learned a lot about community organizing. Access to mental health and counseling resources on campus was always a struggle, and balancing work with school was a challenge for me and many of my friends. The office has access to funding and administration, and along with coalitions formed with student groups, this office can get a lot done to improve the access to culturally competent mental health, as well as uplifting the voices and rights of student workers.

I'm hiring directors right now for each of my platforms! Descriptions are on the link here: https://tinyurl.com/usacgenrep2app as well as the QR code on the flyer. No prior experience, USAC or otherwise, is required! Fill out the form if you're interested and passionate about the work! Apps close this Friday for directors, and general staff applications will come out soon.

Have you bought your Winter Quarter 2019 textbooks yet? Are you avoiding doing so due to increasing and unreasonable costs?

At the beginning of each quarter, many students will walk into a class they’ve fought to enroll in only to find that they simply cannot afford the skyrocketing textbook costs. Money spent on textbooks can go toward things like rent, groceries, and transportation. Cutting down on these necessities in order to afford books is unacceptable.

This quarter, we’ll be focused on fighting for lower textbook costs and helping our student body be smarter about purchasing textbooks. See https://bit.ly/2MbsYKT for more information!

And take actions to stop the tuition increase by joining us next Wednesday and signing our online petition!
http://bit.ly/NOtuitionincrease

"Here is the reality: Many international students I know enroll in more than 20 units per quarter to graduate in 3 years. Others I know move off campus if they can’t afford the unreasonably exorbitant cost of housing with no financial aid. And many more identify with the 42 percent of UC students who skip meals and face food insecurity. It should not come as a surprise that we’re vulnerable humans too.

This is why we protest. This is why we say no to tuition hikes, especially after the hike just last year. While the regents may split the tuition hike decision into two votes to isolate international students who are particularly vulnerable to visas being revoked, we will not forsake our nonresidents. Our fight is one and will remain one: affordability for all."

Check out this Daily Bruin op-ed from one of our tuition coalition members Ashraf Beshay, who is president of the International Student Leadership Coalition.

Join us to Take Action to Stop the UC Tuition Increase! We will have a poster-making session tomorrow (Friday, March 9th) at noon at the bottom of Janss Steps in preparation for the UC Regents meeting.

Introducing Myself as Gen Rep 2

Hi! My name is Justin Rodriguez and I am a second year at UCLA majoring in Economics with minors in Chicanx Studies and Labor Studies. I am running for General Representative with the For the People slate. In my time at UCLA, I have been most shaped by understanding the various labor struggles by workers on campus. The AFSCME Local 3299 strike took three years to reach a victory and an end to outsourcing for dining hall, maintenance, custodial, and patient care workers around the UC. I’ve been involved with rallying student support behind that in both the Student Labor Advocacy Project and MEChA de UCLA’s Community and Labor component. Unions are something that I recognize has been really important to my family’s luck and survival in this country, and one of the reasons I had access in my life to education. Additionally, during my time here at UCLA, I have worked in the dining halls, in student government, and off-campus jobs. Because of all this, a lot of my goals for the office center around student worker rights. I want to collaborate with EVP, IVP, and the Student Labor Advocacy Project to create space, platforms, and data for student workers to connect, organize, and advocate for their interests to administration. Another struggle of mine throughout my life has been with my mental health, and having time and access to receive therapy. Unfortunately, coming to UCLA and trying CAPS did not work out much better for me, for many reasons. This year, in the Gen Rep 1 office with Lalo Velazquez, I worked with CAPS staff on their cultural competency programming. I intend to continue this year and further advocate for increased funding for the CAPS program. While those are my own intentions for the position, the Gen Rep position is about representing student interests, so feel free to reach out to me here via DM, on Instagram at @uclausacgenrep2 or on Reddit at @JustinRUSACGenRep2

Student Workers Initiative For Transparency (SWIFT)

  • Collaborating with other USAC offices to create a Student Labor Task Force for students to raise their concerns with administration about student-worker conditions

  • Advocating for a Student Worker Representative on USAC

  • Working with SLAP to create space and meetings for student workers to voice their concerns to each other

  • Collaborating with IVP to host bi-monthly Know Your Rights Workshops for student workers on campus
  • Working for Organizing and Research Collective (WORC)

  • Create a team of student researchers to research cost of living and student worker experiences specific to UCLA, using both accessible data collected by employers and student-created surveys

  • Collaborating with entities on campus that can provide tangible resources to this or have already done some of this work, including the UCLA Labor Center and SAIRO
  • Culturally Accessible Mental-Health (CAM)

  • Working with CAPS staff and collecting student testimony to petition administration for more funding for CAPS. At some point there has to be clarity that there simply aren’t enough counselors to handle the entire population and it’s unfair to say we have a full wellness counseling unit available for students

  • Working with CAPS staff and counselors, and student groups that offer them trainings, to improve counselors’ understandings of particular student needs on campus
  • Please apply to be a Director at https://tinyurl.com/usacgenrep2app

I have 6 positions open and folks will be in charge of helping me run the office and achieve the platforms I’m trying to achieve. Hope y’all consider applying!
