In the wake of the global pandemic and the impact of the digital revolution on human brain development and behavior, educators, artists, and researchers are coming together to explore innovative approaches to addressing the profound barriers to learning we have all encountered. This year, the Catalyst Convening will focus on resilience through embodied learning, which seeks to integrate artistic experiences, the body, and our senses into the educational process with the objective of supporting academic, social-emotional, and creative lives. In addition, the event will offer participants an experience of self-care, in community.

The Catalyst Conference, organized and hosted by the California Creative Learning Academy (CalCreative) in collaboration with Arts & Healing Initiative, brings together individuals and organizations working towards building spaces and experiences that center wellness, healing, creativity, and justice in education and the arts. The Catalyst Conference is an open-source, free event designed to spur and inspire learning, reflection, and action.

CALL FOR ARTISTS! CALCREATIVE ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAM

This residency program is open to artists and creative people in all categories of the arts, such as visual artists, architects, designers, writers, musicians, theater artists, dancers, filmmakers, etc. Artists can apply as individuals or with their small arts collective. The program’s mission is to provide free art studio space for talented local artists for the creation of original work, while exposing our students to a wide variety of creative practices and processes.

The studio space is located in our school campus at 2709 Media Center Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90065 in Glassell Park. In addition to the use of the studio (every weekday, 7:30am-7pm), a small stipend will be available as part of the residence. Although this residency is not designed to be a teaching residency, most resident artists in the past have engaged in projects with specific grade levels during their residency.

Artists are expected to be on site at least 15 hours a week during school hours (8am to 3:30pm). A portion of their residency time will be devoted to studio visits and/or workshops with CalCreative students. The length of the residency could range from 2 to 12 weeks.

The content of the work must be school-appropriate. Resident artists are under a strict no drugs or alcohol policy while on the CalCreative campus. Successful applicants will be expected to facilitate scheduled studio visits with students ages 5-13. Members of the CalCreative community are also eligible to apply. CalCreative parents in residency will not be eligible to receive honoraria in connection to this residency program. All residents will be required to complete a Live Scan process (covered by the school), TB test, and proof of vaccination.
