Griffith Park Advisory Board

Griffith Park Advisory Board Situated in the eastern Santa Monica Mountain range, the Park’s elevations range from 384 to 1,625 feet above see level. Griffith. Col.

With over 4,210 acres of both natural chapparal-covered terrain and landscaped parkland and picnic areas, Griffith Park is the largest municipal park with urban wilderness area in the United States. With an arid climate, the Park’s plant communities vary from coastal sage scrub, oak and walnut woodlands to riparian vegetation with trees in the Park’s deep canyons. The California native plants repr

esented in Griffith Park include the California species of oak, walnut, lilac, mountain mahagony, sages, toyon, and sumac. Present, in small quantities, are the threatened species of manzanita and berberis. Over the years recreational attractions have been developed throughout the Park, however an amazingly large portion of the Park remains virtually unchanged from the days Native American villages occupied the area's lower slopes. Today's Griffith Park offers numerous family attractions, an assortment of educational and cultural institutions, and miles of hiking and horseback riding trails, and provides visitors an ideal environment for enjoyable recreation activities. Originally a part of the Spanish land grant, Rancho Los Feliz, the park was named for its former owner, Colonel Griffith J. Born in Glamorganshire, South Wales, Griffith emigrated to the United States in 1865, eventually, making a personal fortune in California gold mine speculation. In 1882, Griffith settled in Los Angeles, and purchased a 4,071 acre portion of the Rancho Los Feliz, which stretched northward from the northern boundaries of the Pueblo de Los Angeles. On December 16, 1896, the civic-minded Griffith bequeathed 3,015 acres of his Rancho Los Feliz estate as a Christmas gift to the people of Los Angeles to be used as parkland. The enormous gift, equal to five square miles, was to be given to the city unconditionally - or almost so. " It must be made a place of recreation and rest for the masses, a resort for the rank and file, for the plain people," Griffith said on that occasion. " I consider it my obligation to make Los Angeles a happier, cleaner, and finer city. I wish to pay my debt of duty in this way to the community in which I have prospered." Since Griffith's original gift, further donations of land, along with City purchases and the reversion of private land to public domain have expanded the Park to its present size. Griffith died July 7, 1919, however, he had left a sizeable trust fund to complete the dreams he had for the park; specifically designating funds for the construction of a Greek amphitheater (the Greek Theatre, built 1930) and an observatory and hall of science (Griffith Observatory, built 1935.) Griffith Park stands today a monument to the dedicated vision of one man--Griffith Jenkins Griffith, Park Commission, civic philanthropist, advocate of parklands, and fervent speaker of recreation for the health of Los Angeles.

The new Griffith Park Visitor’s Center is officially open to the public. The grand opening was this past weekend and could not have been possible without the likes of RAPs own Tracy James and Stefanie Smith among countless others. A huge thanks to those who tirelessly worked on this over the last year.

To provide some additional insight into how our board works, when Tracy brought this to our attention in February 2025, we formed an Ad Hoc Committee whose sole focus was the Visitor’s Center. Board members Amy, Sarah, Aaron, and Cristian immediately sprung into action doing whatever they could to help guide and assist Tracy to realize her vision. The rest, as they say, is history.

Well done, all. And, again, many thanks. 🏞️

Special Announcement — Discover Griffith Park like never before with GP-eX!

Did you know that Griffith Park has more than two marathons’ worth of trails?

Now you can experience all 50+ miles of official trails in the Park in 15 segments that offer options for beginners and more experienced hikers.

The Griffith Park Explorer (GP-eX) is a free system of hikes that describes trail history, local flora and fauna, geology, and other insights that bring the Park to life. Launched on April 19 at an Earth Day event in the Park, GP-eX is fun, easy to use and informative.

A printable map, turn-by-turn directions and links to AllTrails routes are available at friendsofgriffithpark.org/gp-ex/, which is optimized for use on mobile devices. Make it your goal to hike all 15 before the end of this year!

From our friends at RAP: “The Park Rangers and Park Maintenance are closing Upper Old Zoo Trail, between Fern Canyon and Bill Eckert Trail. Barricades with ''Trail Closed'' signs are being placed now. There is significant erosion on this trail. An underground pipe was damaged and there is nothing holding up the ground. More rain could compromise the trail even more. Any heavy impact could cause a collapse. This is important information for equestrians as the weight of a horse could cause a collapse. There is no timeline at the moment on when the trail will reopen but we will keep you updated.”
