Read all about LAND’s latest project, Lita Albuquerque: Malibu Line, both online and in print in today’s The New York Times. A new iteration of Lita’s first earthwork from 1978, Malibu Line is a simple but poetic gesture that underscores our interconnectedness to the natural world.

Please note that tickets for this weekend’s viewing have sold out. For updates on additional opportunities to visit Malibu Line in the future, sign up for LAND’s mailing list.

fantasma paraiso / phantom paradise is a multisite exhibition by artist Felix Quintana commissioned and presented by public art nonprofit Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND). From February - March 2024, Quintana’s mixed-media works will form an ephemeral portrait of Los Angeles by placing his signature portrait and landscape photography directly in the locations that they represent. His billboards, wheatpaste posters, vinyl banners, and signs uplift the beauty of the day-to-day routines and the emblems of diasporic communities of Los Angeles. Quintana encourages a slowing-down and flattening of the past and present through his unique cyanotype style of combining photography, print-making, collage, and mixed-media.

Felix Quintana is a 2023 Mohn LAND Grant recipient. fantasma paraiso is the final project of our initial year of Mohn LAND Grant-supported projects. 2024 Mohn LAND Grant recipients will be announced this spring.

LAND and the artist would like to thank Irina Gusin (producer), Arantza Pelayo & the Sterling Organization (Plaza Mexico), Dan McCleary and Luis Hernandez (Art Division), Raven Sanchez (Project Assistant), Jynx Prado (Installation) Carlos Diaz (Print Co Direct), Rey Sepulveda and Jimmy Saldivar (Cultivarte Studios).

Broader Than Broadway
by

On Broadway they do wheelies
with no front wheel
Off Cliftons, stealing tha sunshine
I hop on the 16 in early daylight
Where palm tree’s off of 5th Street
slip and glide
Layers of dust and sprayed tags
Time wanders slow around here
Where they slang doggie dog bags
And Tacos for $1.25

Views from the 11th floor at dusk
Synchronized flashes
pop off and disappear
Across the way, A pool
filled with water that mimicked
the ocean

A Salvadoran flag cut into
an LA logo
Broader than Broadway
the light gleams in slow mo’
A poster repeated promo
The homies not working pro-bono
Sinaloa Jewelers covered by
A draped and tattered banner

I woke up to a street parade
And witness the sun shine move
Like wire spokes
In strips from east to west

Today we share images and a poem by on the final day of his month long residency , coinciding with the last days of the hotel. We are grateful to all of our friends at Ace for all of the collaborations over the year.

This series is also a sneak peak of our forthcoming multisite exhibition with Felix, fantasma paraiso / phantom paradise. fantasma paraiso is means of chronicling the critical and disappearing histories of the city’s immigrant communities and businesses. Stay tuned. 💙

Join Star Feliz () and Ace Hotel Downtown LA () on Saturday, January 13 for a special Green and Gold Tea Party to celebrate the one year anniversary of the Green Gold Oracle Deck . Star was our inaugural LANDxAIR artist in residence at Ace DTLA this past summer, as well as a 2023 recipient of the Mohn LAND grant. Feliz was also part of a major sculpture presentation by LANDxAIR as part of Gatherings last fall .

This year we supported a synergetic community of artists across a variety of scales, and they all blossomed in their own unique way. 2023 brought us deeply impactful projects and turned out to be one of our most ambitious programmatic years — all presented for free, thanks to you. Along with our incredibly generous and enthusiastic funders, we want to say thank you to all of the artists, collaborators, community members, advisors, and everyone who contributed in their own unique way. By centering artists who are invested in community-based practices, together we can be part of creating a more equitable world. ♥️

Tonight + Tomorrow

“Justen employs the history of Black vocal traditions to communicate resistance and liberation. Composed by LeRoy and Alexander Hadyn, the score conveys many of today’s fears and societal issues. Musician and performance artist X’ene Sky shines as the vehicle for Earth’s expression, while movement artist Qwenga interprets the injustices of the planet felt in the physical form.” Okla Jones,

Join LAND next Saturday, November 11 at noon for a walkthrough with LAND ED Laura Hyatt and artist Cole Sternberg of Cole’s current exhibition, a forest of thoughts in quick succession,

The exhibition’s epicenter is a series of 365 letters the artist wrote to Gerhard Richter in 2017. Part meditation, part ritual, Sternberg began his quest to converse with the famed German after stumbling upon his home address in Cologne, unassured that his letters would be received, read, or answered. Alongside the letters, shown in their entirety, are a series of new paintings and sculptures.

All are welcome, no rsvp required. See you then.

Join LAND on Tuesday, November 14 Upstairs for Prelude, 8:30-10:00pm. This will be an intimate opportunity to hear a preview of music from X’ene’s Witness.

Multidisciplinary artist and curator Justen Leroy (leroysoundsystem) creates sonic and performance work that investigates the traditions of Black sound related to spirituality and geology. His most recent work, Lay Me Down In Praise, includes multi-channel visual and sound installations that survey climate change and environmental racism.

Justen will be previewing music from his forthcoming opera, X’ene’s Witness, commissioned and presented by LAND on November 17 & 18 at Marciano Art Foundation.

The score is a sonic response to our current climate crisis and expresses the anxieties Black communities feel in parallel to our Earth in this moment. In addition, collaborators of X’ene’s Witness, X’ene Sky and Alexander Hadyn will be joining to present new works.

Have you been by In the Belly of the Serpent yet?

the Belly of the Serpent by artist Star Feliz is a sculptural work meant to invoke our collective imagination, to envision the abolishment of existing global systems of exploitation. We’re tasked in helping the healing of the Great Mother, often represented by a serpent in the Taino culture. The center point of the mud-built earth mound is an engorged stomach; new opportunities for world-making have been obstructed within this belly of creation by the insatiable extraction of natural and biotic resources for economic gain. In tandem with the same water which flowed through the historic Zanja Madre, as well as Afro-Arawak power plants and mystic symbols studied and employed by the artist, the serpent emerges as an activated force of rebirth.

By utilizing this form, and connecting it to the rehabilitating power of earth and water, Feliz aims to create a sacred space for park visitors to reflect on the potentialities of the future, and then dream them into reality. Conceptually informed by postcolonial feminisms, Caribbean folk healing traditions, and prehistoric earthworks, the mud material references both the mudbrick architecture of West Africa and Southern California. For Feliz, building with materials from the surrounding environment is root medicine for connection, belonging, and remembrance for diasporic populations.

On view through December just south of the main lawn.

LAND thanks the supporters of this work that made it possible: Pamela and through the Mohn LAND Grant, and the , along with our lead annual supporters, the Offield Family Foundation, the Jerry and Terri Kohl Family Foundation, and The Perenchio Foundation.

Procession

Performance begins at 10:00 am
Festival begins at 11:00 am

Los Angeles State Historic Park
1245 North Spring Street
Los Angeles, CA 90012
FREE

Happening this Saturday, Procession is a civic activation that traces historical courses of the Los Angeles River initiated and led by artists Debra Scacco and Joel Garcia. It is a celebration of water in the form of a dynamic social sculpture that starts in the streets of LA with three walking performances. Charted across land that once was water, all walking routes lead to a festival at the LA State Historic Park.

Each performance is guided by a local artist, including members of the Tongva and Chumash tribal communities—i.e., Los Angeles’s First Peoples—Lazaro Arvizu Jr. (Gabrielino/Tongva) and Tina Calderon (Gabrielino Tongva, Chumash, Yoeme), as well as Little Tokyo’s Nobuko Miyamoto. While retracing the river’s former paths on foot, Arvizu Jr., Calderon, and Miyamoto share distinctive cultural practices that reflect their respective origins and traditions.

All are welcome to join a procession! Participants have the opportunity to follow a prominent, local culture bearer alongside other performing artists who collaborate with each walking cohort. All participants are invited to mark this unique occasion by wearing and carrying reflective fiber and paper-based sculptures. Hand-built by members of the larger community, each light-weight sculpture represents an example of river flora or fauna.
