Please join us in the Community Room at the Westchester - Loyola Village Branch Library on Saturday, February 1 at 2:00 p.m. for a screening of Projecting L.A. 2024, a 60-minute video showing compelling street photography and powerful photojournalism by 32 L.A. based photographers. The subject matter: Los Angeles and the people who make up our city. First shown in a gigantic outdoor venue to 2,000 spectators in April, this video of images, set to perfectly matched music, was projected 80 feet wide and three stories tall on the side of a building.

After the projection, several photographers in the show will sit amongst the audience for a casual round-table discussion. The four photographers who will be in attendance are: Daniel Sackheim and Joshua Stern, our producers of Projecting L.A. and both street photographers Julia Dean and Karen Ballard, formerly a photojournalist, now working as a set photographer in the film business.

The J. Paul Getty Trust donated the equipment needed for these projections and is giving a free Getty ($25) parking pass to everyone who attends the Projecting L.A. 2024 Library Series.

Please join us in the Community Room on Thursday, July 20 at 4 p.m. for Family Arts & Crafts -- Chinese Calligraphy with Emmy Lam.

Chinese calligraphy has been a traditional art of Chinese writing for over 5000 years. It is significant during numerous Chinese festivals and celebrations. This workshop is a superb opportunity for everyone to learn how to write a different language and to learn about Chinese culture in a fun and creative way through Chinese calligraphy. Students will learn to write 24 Chinese characters, and they will bring home their prized work.

Please join us on Saturday, June 3 in the Community Room from 1:30 p.m. - 3 p.m. As The Creating the Life and Community You Want Drum Circle will lead you on a drum journey that empowers you to create a better life for yourself and your community by inspiring purpose, personal power, and group goals. You may bring your own drum or use what we have on hand. No skill or experience is necessary.

This event is for adults and children ages 8 and up.

Baila Baila introduces kids to Spanish using music and movement. Kids and caretakers will spend quality time together while they dance, read books, play and sing in Spanish. As we celebrate Women's History Month, please join us in the Community Room on Saturday, March 18 at 3:30 p.m. to learn about Women In Opera That You Don't Want to Mess With.

Across history, there have always been women you wouldn't want to mess with. Many such female characters inhabit the opera stage: the woman scorned, the woman bent on righting a wrong, the woman who wants freedom, the woman who
seeks power and, of course, the woman who will do anything for love.

This talk explores some of these formidable female characters, considers where they come from, and looks at how they are portrayed in opera.

This program is presented in partnership with LA Opera Connects.

We are thrilled to have live music back at the Westchester - Loyola Village Branch Library. Please join us on Saturday, March 18 at 1 p.m. in the Community Room for a performance by the UCLA Gluck Mariachi Ensemble.

The UCLA Gluck Mariachi Ensemble is a group of student musicians performing music from various regions of Mexico. Their repertoire includes songs in various musical styles, including sones jalicienses, huapangos, boleros, and rancheras. They perform outfitted in the characteristic traje de charro, playing a mix of Western instruments such as the violin, guitar, and trumpet and instruments specific to mariachis such as the vihuela and guitarron. The UCLA Gluck Mariachi Ensemble is the latest group in a 50-year tradition of student mariachi groups at UCLA, which housed the first student mariachi in the United States in 1961. They are committed to educating the public about the culture and history of Mexico through its music.
