The Neutra VDL Research Studio and Residences served as home and studio to Richard Neutra —a central figure in the development of the Los Angeles school of modern architecture — from 1932 until his death in 1970. The VDL Research compound provides a unique window into Neutra’s shifting ideas about modern architecture and record of experimentation. The three main phases of development—VDL I, Garden
House, and VDL II, built in 1932, 1940 and 1966, respectively—include explorations with systems and ideas that continue to influence architects today. The house also played host to numerous luminaries such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Lazlo Moholy Nagy, Jorn Utson, and Charles and Ray Eames. Both the City of Los Angeles and the National Register of Historic Places have recognized this property as a cultural landmark. The Department of Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona, has shepherded the development of programs related to the VDL, and oversees its preservation and maintenance. Tours of the property, by Cal Poly Pomona architecture students, are offered on Saturdays from 11am to 3pm.
