UCLA Student Health Advisory Committee

UCLA Student Health Advisory Committee We aim to ensure that UCLA student health interests are represented in the development of health care policies and programs, so all students will have access to high quality, efficient, and cost-effective healthcare.

The Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) works with the Ashe Student Health Center and CAPS leadership, as well as the UC-wide board that oversees the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). There are four undergraduate and four graduate student representatives to advocate on your behalf. If you have any concerns about SHIP or your ability to access the insurance resources you need, please email us: [email protected]. These emails are monitored by the eight SHAC student representatives, so please do not include any personal health information. Our meetings are open to all students. Email us if you'd like to know when our meetings take place. You can attend in person, or send issues to our email that we will bring up at the meeting. Finally, we'll be posting meeting minutes and updates here to ensure you know what we're actively working on. Stay tuned but please feel free to email us at ANY time with questions or concerns! Form available here: http://bit.ly/2ln4FQk. NOTICE: In order to protect your privacy, please do NOT include any personal health information in the content of your message. Mission: Since the Fall of 1972, the Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) has served as an advocate for UCLA students. Specifically, SHAC works to ensure that the services students receive at the Arthur Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center address the unique health care needs of students. SHAC membership includes four graduate student representatives and four undergraduate representatives appointed by student government, as well as a non-voting administrative liaison appointed by the Ashe Center. The committee makes its recommendations to the UCLA Office of the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Development and Health. It is our mission to ensure that UCLA student health interests are represented in the development of health care policies and programs, so all students will have access to high quality, efficient, and cost effective health care. SHAC gathers and reviews information about students’ satisfaction with the Ashe Center and about problems students encounter in obtaining care or using the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). To do this, SHAC reviews anonymous copies of comment cards submitted to the Ashe Center as well as other student satisfaction comments submitted by other means. SHAC also participates in information fairs and works with other student groups such as the Student Health Advocates (SHAs), Student Welfare Commission (SWC), Graduate Student Association (GSA) and Undergraduate Student Association Council (USAC). SHAC is part of the committee that reviews the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) including medical, behavioral health, dental, and vision coverage. In this role, SHAC makes recommendations about how to balance requests for new benefits and still maintain affordable health plan costs for students. SHAC participates in reviewing the Student Health Services annual budget and provides recommendations about the priority of all requests for additional funds. Along with this task, SHAC has direct input to the Student Fee Advisory Committee (SFAC). SHAC meetings are open to all students, so please contact us if you would like to attend. However, if you are interested in becoming a SHAC member for the upcoming academic year, please contact your student government for more information (The Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) works with the Ashe Student Health Center and CAPS leadership, as well as the UC-wide board that oversees the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). There are four undergraduate and four graduate student representatives to advocate on your behalf. If you have any concerns about SHIP or your ability to access the insurance resources you need, please email us: [email protected]. This is then forwarded to all of the SHAC representatives. For the Basic Needs Subsidy Program, students may apply to receive up to $100 to purchase basic needs items such as hygiene products, toiletries, and medicine. Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first serve basis, but students have the option to indicate if they are in a position to require emergency funding within the application. Additionally, we will have multiple application cycles in case any students are unable to apply by the first deadline. This application is currently open, and the first application phase closes on April 27th, 2020.

This Application is not first-come, first-serve, but is rather evaluated on a need basis. This application is also currently open, and the deadline to apply is on Monday, May 4, 2020 @ 11:59pm.
