Imagine if your own son had a 1 in 3 likelihood of going to jail or prison in his lifetime. This is the harsh reality for young African-American men between the ages of 18-30, a reality that has been shaped by generations of racial injustice. Join us at the #MPACMediaAwards on April 6 as we honor the film Just Mercy for sparking a national conversation about the racial inequalities in the criminal justice system. Bryan Stevenson will be with us to accept the award. For more info/tix visit: mpac.org/ma

We had an incredible Children's Media Screenwriting Lab last week, the 4th Lab in our series for Muslim writers! Seven screenwriters were selected from all the submissions and spent a day workshopping their scripts, practicing their pitches, learning next steps in development, and engaging in informative conversations with Children's Media industry leaders.

We are so grateful to Nadine Zylstra, Head of Kids & Learning Entertainment at YouTube, Doreen Spicer, creator of Disney Channel's "The Proud Family", Nida Chowdhry, co-founder of Stranger Magic Productions, Fanshen Cox, Producer and Head of Strategic Outreach at Pearl Street Films, Tim McKeon, co-creator and head writer of PBS Kids' "The Odd Squad", and Sascha Paladino, EP and showrunner of Disney's upcoming series, "Mira, Royal Detective". What an invaluable gift to have them share their expertise with this talented group of Muslim creatives!

Are we exporting the poison of racism & bigotry? The unconscionable shooting spree in Germany and stabbings in England were done by right-wing extremists targeting immigrants. The German shooter’s manifesto directly references President Trump’s divisive and racist slogans. The rise of violent nationalism is a threat to all. Our elected officials must take action to eradicate hateful rhetoric at home before preaching peace and unity abroad.

We pray for the families of the victims and stand in solidarity with the people of Germany and England speaking up against this poison.

What is MPAC?

Founded in 1988, the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) is a national public affairs nonprofit organization working to promote and strengthen American pluralism by improving understanding of, and policies that, impact American Muslims. Over the past 30 years, MPAC has built a reputation of being a dynamic and trusted American Muslim voice for policymakers, opinion shapers, and community organizers across the country.

Our staff, based in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles, are experts in designing and executing innovative and effective legislative, strategic messaging, and issue advocacy campaigns. We leverage our relationships with legislators, government agencies, executive departments, and thought leaders to improve policies on national security, civil liberties, immigration, public safety and religious freedom for all Americans. We also provide media analysis and messaging strategies to reporters and media professionals to inform public opinion and advise the entertainment industry on creating more humanizing and nuanced portrayals of Muslims and Islam. Equally important, we build alliances and coalitions with diverse communities to encourage active citizenship.

We thrive in the rapidly changing world of high-stakes policy and high-profile advocacy where strategic planning is critical, speed and messaging are essential, and thorough analysis is imperative. We do all these things to enrich American society and to exemplify core Islamic values of mercy, justice, peace, human dignity, freedom, and equality for all.

Values

We promote the Islamic and American values of mercy, justice, peace, human dignity, freedom, and equality for all.

Mercy: "And thus O Prophet, we have sent thee as (an evidence of Our) grace towards all the worlds." (Quran 21:107)

Justice: "O you who have attained to faith! Be ever steadfast in upholding equity, bearing witness to the truth for the sake of God, even though it be against your own selves or your parents and kinsfolk. Whether the person concerned be rich or poor, God's claim takes precedence over (the claims of) either of them. Do not, then, follow your own desire, lest you swerve from justice: for if you distort (the truth), behold, God is indeed aware of all that you do!" (Quran 4:135)

Peace: "But if they incline to peace, incline thou to it as well, and place thy trust in God: verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing!" (Quran 8:61)

Human Dignity: "Now, indeed, We have conferred dignity on all the children of Adam, and born them over land and sea, and provided for them sustenance out of the good things of life, and favored them far above most of Our creation." (Quran 17:70)

Freedom: "There shall be no coercion in matters of faith. Distinct has now become the right way from (the way of) error: hence, he who rejects the powers of evil and believes in God has indeed taken hold of a support most unfailing, which shall never give way: for God is all-hearing, all-knowing." (Quran 2:256)

Equality for All: "O men! Behold, We have created you all out of a male and a female, and have made you into nations and tribes, so that you may come to know one another. Verily, the noblest of you in the sight of God is the one who is most deeply conscious of Him. Behold, God is all-knowing, all-aware." (Quran 49:13)
