From all of us at MPAC, Merry Christmas!
We wish everyone a joyful holiday season in the spirit of harmony and gratitude.
Today’s passage of the includes provisions to strengthen our Democracy, especially in a post January 6th reality. Protecting democracy is one of the core components of our policy work in 2022, demonstrated through our Democracy Forums– a series of five events across the U.S., which brought together a panel of experts in the field, including a number of lawmakers.
The bipartisan legislation would update the certification process for presidential elections, which former President Donald Trump and his allies tried to exploit after the 2020 election.
Today’s passage of the included a provision that will create an interfaith prayer space in the U.S. Capitol. We worked with Members of Congress on this effort by developing a successful Congressional engagement strategy. As a result of our efforts, American Muslims and people of all faiths will now have a dedicated prayer space in the U.S. Capitol.

LIVE NOW Since 2020, many legislators have attempted to sow doubt regarding election integrity. As midterm elections draw near, democracy faces perhaps the biggest challenge to its stability and enduring legacy. Using the Big Lie as a pretense, local politicians introduced 126 bills in 28 states that affect absentee voting, registration policies, polling stations, and ID requirements. These measures disproportionately affect people of color and limit the options citizens use to exercise their right to vote. To continue the fight for democracy, MPAC is hosting a forum focused on the implications of this year's midterm cycle in protecting American democracy. Panelists: → Rep. Ron Reynolds, Texas State Rep District 27 → Christian Menefee, Harris, TX County Attorney → Chris Hollins, former County Clerk of Harris County, TX

After two years of virtual events, we’re happy to be coming together in person at this year's #MPACconvention. Get tickets at https://bit.ly/mpac2022. We’re also excited to announce that Mo Amer will be our special guest at this year’s event on Sunday, October 30th! We are so proud of Mo! He’s breaking barriers and improving visibility for Muslims in comedy and on screen. His new series, #MO, premiered on Netflix on August 24th. Swipe to watch a clip. In the semi-autobiographical series, Mo plays a Palestinian refugee living in Houston, Texas with his family. Always one fleeting step away from being granted asylum and U.S. citizenship, Mo, his mother, and his siblings remain resilient in the face of painful setbacks through laughter and spiritual grounding. Real and nuanced stories such as MO create windows into our rich and diverse experiences and cultures. This is a major moment for representation. "It’s the first time ever that a Palestinian has created [and is the] lead of his own show, and obviously, that’s part of our origin story.” - Variety Here’s to another Mohammed making history!

Dr Jordan B Peterson posted a video on YouTube disparaging our community, assuming and insisting that American Muslims are not working to further dialogue, both internally within our faith and externally. Given that such a significant part of the policy work we do at the Muslim Public Affairs Council is done through collaboration with members of the faith community, we decided that a response was necessary. #MPAC #americanmuslims #muslim #Muslims #jordanpeterson #jordanpeterson

Empowering Afghans: Reframing the Narrative and Providing Support Afghan Virtual Summit Day 1 Session Even before the coalition withdrawal in August 2021, Afghanistan was enduring a drought, ongoing conflict, political instability, and a pandemic. The events of the last several months have exacerbated existing vulnerabilities and created a brand new crisis in the form of an economic collapse. Afghanistan is now facing one of the most pressing and avoidable humanitarian disasters of our time. This panel seeks to discuss conditions on the ground, highlight channels for relief and aid that are proving effective, and explore how the world can and should act.
#COMINGSOON: Join us for a virtual summit on the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan and what we can do to be the best allies. Did you miss this conversation? MPAC President, Salam Al-Marayati, sat down with John D. Cohen, the head of the Dept. of Homeland Security’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis, to reflect on our national security and counterterrorism approach over the past two decades. https://bit.ly/3kfAx6e
In the days, months and years, following the tragic morning of September 11, 2001, American Muslims have borne the brunt of the Bush administration’s policies in reaction to those horrifying attacks. Chief among those responses was the Patriot Act, which created a deeply disturbing and overly intrusive surveillance system. It could have been much worse. Suhail Khan, who was a senior political appointee in the Bush Administration, has received bipartisan praise for his work in trying to moderate efforts while the legislation was being drafted. We’re honored to have him join our panel today-- his background as a lawyer and as an advisor on Capitol Hill and in the Bush Administration will help us understand what was happening in the room where decisions that transformed our lives were being made. Civil society groups and the federal government have worked hand in hand over the past two decades in the response to 9/11, both on reforming our intelligence capabilities and our military and diplomatic response. To speak further on each of those, we are joined by Hamid Khan, who is currently a professor of law at the University of Michigan Law School and previously served in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Departments of State and Defense. Between our two panelists, we are excited to present our audience with a 360-degree perspective in a bipartisan way of what happened after 9/11, why certain decisions were made, and reflections on what went well and what should have been done differently.
In light of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, join us for an intimate conversation with John D. Cohen, the head of the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis, to reflect on our national security and counterterrorism approach over the past two decades. ****** John D. Cohen is the top counterterrorism official at the Department of Homeland Security and leads the Department’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis. He has over 30 years of experience in national security and was the head of that office during the Obama Administration.
It is imperative upon us to right the wrongs from the past two decades and heed the voices of Afghans as we move forward. Watch the full webinar as we discussed the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan. https://bit.ly/3mS58br
