Project Angel Food is Los Angeles’ leading non-profit provider of nutritional meals and counseling for people living with serious illnesses, such as cancer, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, and renal failure. Borne in response to the AIDS crisis, today Project Angel Food provides its vital services for people suffering across a spectrum of critical diagnoses and reflecting the county’s diverse demographic

s. Informed by our belief in ‘food as medicine’, our healthy meals are medically tailored by our registered dieticians and chefs to meet the nutritional care required by our clients’ specific medical condition. Our clients, homebound and often living alone, are unable to shop and cook for themselves, and rely on Project Angel Food as a vital lifeline of nourishment and hope. Since our inception in 1989, Project Angel Food has delivered almost 9 million meals to over 15,000 people, a testament to the Agency’s ability to implement and sustain a successful home-delivered food and nutrition program over the last 25 years.

Bryan Cranston brought a little “Walter White” chemistry to KTLA 5 Saturday night, surprising Noah Wyle, Eric McCormack and Steven Weber during Project Angel Food’s live benefit television special, Lead with Love: Going the Distance.

The unforgettable moment became one of the night’s biggest highlights as Project Angel Food’s annual broadcast raised $589,000, exceeding its half-million-dollar goal and helping keep medically tailored meals moving to critically ill people across Los Angeles County.

“Every dollar raised tonight keeps our vans on the road and our meals reaching neighbors in their greatest time of need,” Project Angel Food CEO Richard Ayoub said. “This is what Lead with Love has always stood for: dignity, nourishment and the very best of the human spirit.”

This year’s theme, Going the Distance, reflects the extraordinary commitment required to reach vulnerable neighbors throughout Los Angeles County with nutritious meals, dignity and human connection — particularly as rising transportation costs place new pressure on our delivery operation.

In the earliest days of Project Angel Food, before corporate, foundation, or government support, this work was carried by love — and by artists who refused to look away.

In 1990, at the height of the AIDS crisis, David Hockney was one of the first to say yes.

He came into our kitchen. He helped prepare meals. He delivered food, dignity and care to people too often left alone. And he brought others with him — friends, artists, and Angelenos who believed, as we still do, that food is medicine and food is love.

David’s generosity never stopped. He helped make history through Divine Design, donated more than 15 works of art to support our mission, and gave year after year to help nourish our clients during the holidays.

The world will remember David Hockney for his color, light, water and Los Angeles skies. We will also remember him here — in an apron, in our kitchen, showing up when people were hungry, frightened and forgotten.

His artistry was brilliant. His heart was generous.

Rest in beauty, David. Thank you for helping us lead with love.
