Recently, our team reflected on the wildfires that swept through Los Angeles in January. In this blog post we discuss the grief and gratitude that co-exist. There’s also an acknowledgment of the unique and important role communicators play now and in the days ahead, from connecting residents with critical resources to telling the story of an organization’s impact. Check out these reflections and read about 4 principles to help guide you as we take these next steps together. (www.causecommunications.org/insights)

What do we need to measure to advance real change? How can data drive discovery and new solutions?

These were just some of the key questions being explored over the last two days at Words to Deeds 2024, a multi-disciplinary convening that Cause was proud to support and amplify.

Words to Deeds is a statewide collaborative and California’s premier forum for decriminalizing mental illness and preventing people with behavioral health needs from becoming involved with the criminal justice system.

Words to Deeds convenings incubate innovative approaches and ideas, promote best practices, and advance public policy to strengthen communities and advance justice and health equity across California.

In partnership with the Mental Health Services Oversight Commission and the Council on Criminal Justice and Behavioral Health, “W2D 2024 – Establishing Metrics to Measure Success: Diversion, Data, and Accountability” focused on establishing metrics and shaping a shared vision to unite key partners such as government, behavioral health, educational and advocacy organizations about how to measure success in decriminalizing mental illness, diversion, and reentry.

With gratitude for Kit Wall, Toby Ewing, Brenda Grealish, Stephanie Welch, Erik Ewers, and all the other leaders whose commitment and collaboration made this convening such a great success.

🏳️‍🌈 On today's blog, our founder R. Christine Hershey reflects on the legacy of LGTBQ activist David Mixner who passed away yesterday at his home in Manhattan at the age of 77.

Hershey collaborated with Mixner and others to fight for LGBTQ rights from the 1970s onward, particularly during the height of the AIDS epidemic in the 80s and 90s.

⬇️Read on for her reflection on his legacy of a life well lived in the pursuit of justice and equity and the connection to communications as a force for good.

You interact with – and rely on – a wide variety of groups in order to meet your mission, from program participants and volunteers to funders and partners. The more you know about your audiences, the more effective you can be in engaging them.

As you plan ahead for 2024, it’s never too late (or too early!) to make sure your organization’s communications strategy aligns with who your audiences are, what’s important to them, and how to reach them.

This Fall, Cause Communications had the pleasure of hosting Christian Ali, a Public Affairs Fellow with Coro Southern California for a four-week rotation. Through hands-on projects addressing a diverse range of social issues, Christian was able to deepen his understanding of the role of strategic communications in advancing social justice.

“Now I see how using ‘communications for good’ can propel social change, shape public perception, and influence public policy,” shares Christian.

Though Christian’s time with us was brief, his contributions left us optimistic about a brighter future with the next generation of social justice leaders and communications ambassadors at the helm.

We’re excited to announce that Cause Communications has opened a new office location, based out of The California Endowment's Center for Healthy Communities (CHC) in Sacramento. Located in the heart of the state capital, the CHC building is known as a community hub for mobilizing change – a fitting place for Cause to call home given our own history of 45+ years of action and impact. As a sister site to our Los Angeles headquarters, this new space will enable Cause to make trainings and capacity building accessible to more organizations, deepen our collaborations with community-based organizations, and connect with more foundations and government agencies in the name of social change.

Interested in scheduling some face time in Sacramento? Drop us a line at [email protected].

Earlier this month, Cause Communications had the pleasure of co-sponsoring and participating in PRSA Los Angeles Chapter's and Center for Nonprofit Management's “Quality Time with PR Minds” event, which pairs changemakers from the nonprofit sector with communications professionals to strengthen impact. Vicky Arenas from our team worked with two incredible organizations to co-design ideas and solutions that center strategic communications to advance health and healing in Los Angeles.

We’re proud to take part in events that foster deep learning, build relationships, and embrace the intersection of using communications to drive positive social change. Cause was also pleased to offer all event attendees our Communications Toolkit filled with practical tips and guidance to take communications to the next level.
