Shout out to the brave Melyssa Rivas, who stood up for a vulnerable Downey community member and called out what she saw as a racially motivated kidnapping attempt, which ended due to her bearing witness. We see a little bit of Philip Marlowe in her actions, neither tarnished nor afraid.

The only building we ever landmarked was the Los Angeles Times, which brought us into battle with councilman Jose Huizar, a confessed racketeer, and we learned L.A. Noir is not history, it's now. We need to fight for the city we love, and leaders and landlords who love it, too.

Checking on El Pueblo, which is fine except for some spray paint and way too many shuttered shops, we met Bubbles, Olvera Street's resident artist. He can be found working on his sketchbook every day, and hopes you'll say hi. Just don't ask to buy a drawing!

Checking in on Downtown landmarks. There's spray paint on the windows at Clifton's (used to be our favorite) Cafeteria. 2 out of 3 are gang tags, which is not common on Broadway. And the awning provides a little shade for someone to rest in.

Chilling motion made during Tuesday's Los Angeles City Council meeting: Ysabel Jurado, Tim McOsker and Eunisses Hernandez are concerned Federal entities will unlawfully enter City facilities, seek security report back.

The chilling part: as usual, our "leaders" don't plan ahead.
