Excessive Heat Continues in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is expecting the current extreme heat wave to continue this week. The City of Los Angeles has air-conditioned cooling centers at designated Recreation and Parks facilities open this Labor Day holiday through Wednesday from 10am-9pm. Please note that due to the holiday City Library cooling centers are closed Monday September 5th, but will reopen Tuesday. Find the current list of cooling centers, including their locations and updated dates and hours of operation by visiting the emergency.lacity.org/heat website.

BE PERSONALLY PREPARED:

En Español Summer months can bring fun, sun, and heat! Advisory: Excessive Heat Warning August 31-September 5, 2022

Excessive Heat Warning and Ozone Advisory for Los Angeles from Wednesday 8/31-Monday 9/5

Los Angeles is expecting a long period of extreme heat from Wednesday at 11am through at least Monday at 8pm. Temperatures could reach up to 112 degrees in the San Fernando Valley and up to 105 degrees in downtown Los Angeles and the LA basin. This heat wave will also impact air quality, and smog will reach unsafe levels in many parts of the City. Since these extremely high temperatures and bad air quality will continue for many days in a row, it’s very important to be proactive and make sure you and your community have a plan to stay safe during extreme heat.

BE PERSONALLY PREPARED:

Keep cool by resting in shady areas or buildings with air conditioning and drinking plenty of water. If you do not live in an air-conditioned building, you can take refuge from the heat at a public library, recreation facility, senior center or other public air-conditioned building near you. You may call 311 to identify the cooling centers closest to you, or visit https://ready.lacounty.gov/heat/ to see a map of cooling center locations, and hours of operation (additional centers being added). Many pools and splash pads at your local Recreation and Parks locations will be available over the holiday weekend- you can find their hours of operation and locations by visiting the Daily Pool Status Website.

HELP YOUR COMMUNITY PREPARE:

Check up on relatives and neighbors, especially if they have pre-existing health conditions or are sensitive to heat. Let them know the heat is coming and the ways to stay safe. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Additional information about staying safe during extreme heat, and a list of LA City cooling centers that will be operational during the Labor Day weekend are available at www.emergency.lacity.org/heat.

IF YOU MUST BE OUTSIDE:

Take extra precautions if you work, exercise, or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening, or until this period of extreme heat is over. See the image below as a guide to help you recognise f signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, OSHA recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments and staying hydrated. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. Employers must provide access to sufficient water.

Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency- Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location, and then immediately call 911. Non-emergency heat-related information can be found by calling 311.

Sharing this from our Foothill Trails District Neighborhood Council, Shadow Hills Neighbors:
REDISTRICTING FILE WILL BE HEARD IN CITY COUNCIL TOMORROW

The Redistricting Committee's "Los Angeles City Council Redistricting Commission / City of Los Angeles / Council Districts / Recommended Map" Report went to the City Council on Friday, Oct. 29, 2021, and it is scheduled for discussion on the floor of the Council TOMORROW, Nov. 2, 2021. The report DID NOT include the public comments spreadsheet. However, public comment opened yesterday to the City Council itself on this issue.

SHPOA recommends that anyone and everyone who still has the stamina and patience to please write to the City Council about Shadow Hills' request to stay in CD7, and asking that the City Council also reunite the western part of Stonehurst back into CD7 also, as seen in the FTDNC map. Hopefully your comments can be cut and pasted from previous emails to the Commission and put into the City Council's Public Comment Form TONIGHT or tomorrow AM before the City Council meets.

The file # is 20-0668-S7.

The File itself can be seen here: https://cityclerk.lacity.org/lacityclerkconnect/index.cfm?fa=ccfi.viewrecord&cfnumber=20-0668-S7

The link to the public comments page can be found here: https://cityclerk.lacity.org/publiccomment/?cfnumber=20-0668-S7.

Make sure that any communication has the file number in it.
