The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is dedicated to providing Safety, Service, and Security to California citizens and everyone who uses the thousands of miles of our state’s roadways. Each CHP employee is dedicated to ensuring you get home safely, that quality services are provided to you when you need it, and that you feel safe and secure as you travel throughout our great state. As the fifth largest law enforcement agency in the nation, the Department will continue its primary responsibility to anticipate and respond to the needs of the public which it serves. El Niño Weather Advisory!
With El Niño bringing the potential for increased rainfall, be prepared for wet weather and possible flooding. Flooded roads are extremely dangerous — just a few inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle away.
Key reminders:
• Slow down and increase following distance.
• Turn on your headlights when your wipers are in use.
• Turn Around, Don’t Drown — never drive through flooded roadways.
Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain. If you must travel, use caution and check Caltrans QuickMap for road conditions and closures.
Stay prepared, and as always, drive safe, California!

🚨 MAXIMUM ENFORCEMENT PERIOD 🚨

Beginning today, October 2, at 6:00 pm through 5:59 am on Saturday, October 3, California Highway Patrol officers and personnel of all ranks throughout California will be out in force with a focus on identifying and removing impaired drivers from the road.

This Maximum Enforcement Period is not about how many citations are written or arrests are made. It’s about preventing crashes, saving lives, and making sure more families make it home safely.

Safety on California’s roadways is everyone’s responsibility. If you drink, do not drive. Plan ahead, designate a sober driver, or use a rideshare.

Our deepest condolences are with the family, friends, and fellow officers of California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Liles, #19932, of the Visalia Area, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on September 28, 2026.

Officer Liles dedicated more than 16 years of honorable service to the California Highway Patrol. He leaves behind his wife, two children, parents, and two sisters.

An official memorial fund has been established to support his family during this incredibly difficult time. 100% of all donations will go directly to his beneficiary, with CAHP Credit Union covering all donation fees.

It is with profound sadness that the California Highway Patrol announces the line-of-duty death of Officer Brian Liles of the Visalia Area.

On September 28, 2026, at approximately 5:11 p.m., CHP Motorcycle Officer Liles was involved in an on-duty traffic crash on State Route 99, just north of State Route 190 in Tipton. He sustained critical injuries and, despite lifesaving efforts, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Officer Liles, 44, served the people of California for more than 16 years. After graduating from the CHP Academy in 2010, he was assigned to the San Jose Area and later served in the Hayward and Fresno Areas before transferring to the Visalia Area in 2019.

Officer Liles is survived by his wife, two children, his parents, and two sisters.

The CHP extends its deepest condolences to Officer Liles’ family, friends, loved ones, and all who served alongside him. His dedication to public service and commitment to protecting the people of California will not be forgotten.
