America's Wildlife

America's Wildlife Help define the future of wildlife conservation and the National Wildlife Refuge System - visit www. Today, the U.S.

For more than a century the National Wildlife Refuge System has been at the forefront of protecting wildlife and wildlife habitat in the United States. At over 150 million acres, the Refuge System is the premier wildlife conservation system in the world and has achieved numerous conservation successes throughout its history – such as the strategic protection of wetlands to protect ducks and other

waterfowl. Fish and Wildlife Service hopes to build on these successes by utilizing new technology and science, to allow them to better address threats to our wildlife heritage such as climate change and habitat loss while staying relevant in the hearts and minds of an ever changing American public.

It's ! While they may not be perfect weather predictors, groundhogs do in fact emerge from dens in early February.

Groundhogs fatten up during the warm seasons and snooze for most of the colder months. They are among the few true hibernators.

Anchored in the south by the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge Complex and to the north by the Hopper Mountain Refuge Complex, the SoCal Urban Wildlife Refuge Project reaches deep into Los Angeles’ diverse urban core where the revitalization of the Los Angeles River is bringing back nature to urban residents.

The SoCal Project is part of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s Urban Wildlife Conservation Program. With eighty percent of Americans now living in cities, there is an increasing challenge of how to connect current and future generations with National Wildlife Refuges and the outdoors.

The goal of the Urban Wildlife Conservation Program is to reach into communities to find ways to connect urban youth with America’s natural wonders.

Produced by Tandem Stills + Motion, Inc. in partnership with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Special thanks to the Los Angeles Conservation Corps and Friends of the Los Angeles River, Santa Barbara Zoo, Fillmore Middle School, Fillmore Elementary School, City of Imperial Beach, City of San Diego, City of Los Angeles, Ventura County, Ventura Travel & Tourism Board.

The New Haven Urban Wildlife Refuge Partnership members in CT are quantifying the impacts of connecting people with nature through Schoolyard Habitats. Data show a 28% increase in how often teachers go outside for lessons in the first year of Schoolyard Habitat implementation. Schools that are in their second year of Schoolyard Habitat implementation have a 57% increase in how often teachers go outside for lessons. These data are collected and analyzed by Audubon CT. We attribute the increase to several factors including exceptional New Haven teachers willing to try new things with their students, in-school environmental education programs offered by conservation and education professionals within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Audubon CT and Common Ground High School as well as effective teacher training programs offered twice a year by New Haven Urban Wildlife Refuge Partners to show teachers how to use their Schoolyard Habitats.
