Welcome to the Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary page managed jointly with the Friends of Jug Bay - a non-profit organization that acts to preserve the Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary and support its education and research programs. The Sanctuary is operated by the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks, and is a component of the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Mar

yland. Habitats include forest, meadow, and one of the largest freshwater tidal wetlands on the East Coast. We welcome public visitors from 9am-5pm on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Support our snappers by keeping an eye on the road, especially this month, as mother snapping turtles leave the water to find places to lay their eggs..

1. Most snapping turtles don't reach egg-laying age until they are 17 years old or older!
2. It is legal to commercially fish snapping turtles in Maryland year-round.
3. Little is scientifically known about the population health of snapping turtles in Maryland.
