National Weather Service has issued a TORNADO WARNING !

08/13/2026

If anyone heard the air raid siren go off in Fallsburg, please don’t be alarmed. We are in the process of fixing up the old station on Horseshoe Road and turned the power on for the first time in many years. The siren you heard is the old way we notified the volunteer fire fighters that there was a call and they needed to respond to the station.

As many of you may or may not know, one of the the biggest hurdles facing first responders in Lawrence County has been our communications system. It is old and outdated and is in need of upgrades! There are several locations within Lawrence County that are “dead zones” and radio communication does not work. Replacing or upgrading the system comes with a very big price tag!!

The Fallsburg Fire Department has been aggressively working to solve this issue to keep our members and the public safe. We recently purchased a used 100 watt radio for our rescue truck that has been able to reach dispatch from everywhere in our district. We also recently purchased mobile Starlink satellite internet service. This will allow our members to have access to cellular networks and the internet while on scene. This is not a permanent fix but will help keep our members and the public safe until the current system can be upgraded.

These type of purchases for the department are not cheap but are a necessity. We could not do this without the Fallsburg and surrounding communities continued support of the Fire Dept. Donations, no matter how small, all add up and allow us to keep the community safe ! The best way to help is to attend our events! Once again Thank you !!

Tuesday night, Fort Gay Volunteer Fire Department had a structure fire, which was contained to one bedroom.

During overhaul, Fort Gay Firefighter Brayden Burton began feeling bad/sick and was taken outside to be checked. While being checked he began having seizures. He was transported to Three Rivers Medical Center and during transport he had several more seizures. Later on he was transferred to Cabell where he continued to have seizures. The next morning his airway began to swell/close off, his O2 dropped, and he is now on a ventilator.

We are asking our community to rally behind Brayden, as well as his family. They need all the prayers possible. Please join us in prayer for one of our fellow firefighters.

⚖️🚓 NEW KENTUCKY HALO ACT NOW IN EFFECT 🚓⚖️

A new Kentucky law known as the HALO Act officially took effect today, July 15, creating a 25-foot buffer zone around first responders while they are performing their official duties.

The law applies to law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and certain federal officers. Under the law, a person who has been warned to stay back and then intentionally enters the 25-foot buffer while harassing, threatening, or interfering with a first responder may face criminal charges.

The legislation was passed during the 2026 session of the Kentucky General Assembly after lawmakers voted to override Gov. Andy Beshear’s veto. Because the bill did not include an emergency clause, it became effective July 15 along with numerous other new state laws.

Supporters say the law provides first responders with additional space to safely perform their duties during emergencies. Opponents have raised concerns about its potential impact on public oversight and citizens’ ability to observe or record police activity.
