Discover One of Virginia’s Most Unique Horseback Riding Destinations:
Ride Through History at Trevilian Station Battlefield
Looking for scenic horseback riding trails in Virginia? Trevilian Station Battlefield offers approximately 12 miles of rider-friendly trails through preserved Civil War battlefield landscapes, forests, and countryside.
At Trevilian Station in Louisa County, riders experience something rare: a trail system where you are actively riding across the same ground used by Civil War cavalry. The Battle at Trevilian Station was one of the largest all-cavalry battlefields of the war, and the landscape today remains intact and rideable, with wooded trails, creek crossings, and open rural stretches.
Here, there’s a direct connection between riders & the history of the land beneath them.
12 Miles of Connected Trail Loops
The trail system begins at the Oakland Road trailhead and branches into interconnected loops that allow riders to customize their route. Each color-marked trail offers a different experience:
Red Trail – “Red Right Return”
The main navigation spine of the system. Keep the red markers on your right and you’ll naturally loop back to the trailhead.
Blue Trail – “Trail of Lost Souls”
A shaded route featuring creek crossings and soft forest footing, including sections where riders can enter shallow water on horseback.
Green Trail – “Quiet Pines Trail”
A peaceful forest ride through pine stands and hardwood mix, with one long open stretch across Dunn farm land that riders enjoy for racing.
Pink Trail – “Victoria’s Trail”
A quieter, reflective route that passes cemetery areas and memorial sites. Notably, this is the trail where Victoria’s headstone was found.
Orange Trail – “Warning Trail”
A more rugged section with steeper banks and slightly more technical footing than the rest of the system.
Yellow Trail – Historic Connector Loop
Runs along Route 613 and behind the historic rail station area, linking battlefield zones with surrounding countryside.
Operating Hours
The trails are open daily from Memorial Day – Labor Day. Outside of this summer season, the trails are open from sunup to sundown on Sundays, weather permitting. Riders should check ahead for weather-related closures or maintenance updates.
What the Ride Feels Like
This is a shaded, easy-to-moderate trail system designed for relaxed riding. Most of the terrain is wooded, with soft footing, gentle grades, and frequent creek crossings. Volunteers have added bridges and maintain trail surfaces, making it accessible for a wide range of riders and horses.
This makes it especially well-suited for:
- Trail riders of all experience levels, including casual riders
- Young horses gaining exposure or training
- Riders seeking a calm, scenic ride with meaningful context
A Labor of Love
The trails are maintained almost entirely by local volunteers – known as the “Trevilian Saints” – who clear paths, repair bridges, and support ongoing improvements. It’s a grassroots system built on local care and long-term stewardship, including partner and visitor donations.
Kathryn Daniels Anderson, lead volunteer, describes her connection to the site: “I’ve always been a history buff, especially Civil War history. To have these trails right here, and open to everyone, it’s really special. It’s been a labor of love.”
Beyond the quiet forests & relaxed riding experience, the sense-of-place in this landscape keeps riders coming back. As Kathryn adds in reflecting on what visitors experience: “People come out here expecting a scenic trail ride, and leave realizing they’ve ridden through something much deeper.”
Rider Guidelines & Etiquette
The trail system is open and welcoming, with a few key expectations:
- Dogs are allowed (as long as they have good recall, & are under control around horses)
- No bikes or wheeled vehicles
- Group riding is encouraged
- Stay on marked trails and respect cemetery areas
- Use red markers for navigation (“keep red on your right”)
Plan Your Ride
A few things to know before you go:
- Parking is available for ~25-30 horse trailers
- Trail map kiosk at the entrance
- Picnic table area
- Seasonal porta-potty
- Creek access points for horses (weather dependent)
- No reservations required
Note: There is no potable water onsite, so riders should come fully self-sufficient.
